Can you accept a college, then reject them to go to another school?

Hi,

I'm a community college student and I'm transferring to a college in Fall 2013.

I recently got accepted to Drexel University in Philadelphia (my fall back school) and I have to enroll and put down a $300 deposit by May 1st if I want to go there.

However, I applied to three much better schools (Amherst College, Williams, and Vassar which I'll get to my credentials later on) who don't send out acceptances until mid May.

Am I able to accept Drexel, put down my deposit and then not attend if I get accepted to the other schools? I could care less about losing the deposit, but I just don't know if I'm allowed to reject Drexel once I accept.

I feel like I have a pretty good chance in getting in the other schools since I talked with all of their transfer departments and meet the requirments. (not to sound modest)

Keep in mind Amerhest College takes 60% of their transfer students from community colleges...

My credentials are:
3.9 GPA
Taken highest math at comm. college - Calc II
Taken Chem 1,2 and inorganic Chem 1-
VP of Service for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 1 - year
Founder and President of the Geology Club (my major)
Officer of Environmental Action Society
Writing Peer Tutor at my Comm College - 1 year
Over 200 hours of community service in 2012
Excellent Essays - Had my past english professor, writing lab director, PTK Advisor look over them.

The main question is… Can I reject Drexel once I accept?

Thanks

However, I applied to three much better schools (Amherst College, Williams, and Vassar which I’ll get to my credentials later on) who don’t send out acceptances until mid May.

Is that true? Transfers don’t get notified until Mid May at those schools, but Drexel requires transfers to decide by May 1st?

If that’s true about Drexel, you can request extra time to make your decision. If other schools make their transfer decisions at a later time, then Drexel likely knows that.

Geology, I think you have your Amherst information wrong. The Amherst admissions site says that of all transfers 60% attended community college. This is very different than saying that 60% of transfer applicants from community colleges are accepted. If you look at Amherst’s admissions stats page you’ll see that last year, out of 509 transfer applicants 21 were accepted. That’s an acceptance rate of approximately 4%.

Geology, yes, you can do that. Happens every year.

You will forfeit your deposit, but there won’t be any other adverse consequences.

Good luck with those other applications. Those are indeed some tough nuts to crack.

Thanks mom2collegekids!

Your totally right Sue22! Ahhh! That’s 96% more worrying for me!

Thanks Sikorsky!

Luckily you have a nice acceptance from Drexel in hand. :)
