Transfer Acceptance! But one problem...

Hello friends,

I am currently a student at UC Berkeley. I applied as a transfer for the Fall of 2017 to:

Amherst
Williams
Swarthmore
NYU

Yesterday I received my acceptance letter from NYU CAS (Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, German), which is exciting. But I have one problem;
NYU needs me to confirm/decline admission for Fall 2017 by May 1. Amherst/Williams/Swat will not give me their decision until May 15.

I don’t want to accept NYU before hearing from the others, because Williams is my ideal destination. However, I love NYU and would not want to neglect them entirely and then get in nowhere. What is one to do in this situation? I can’t imagine it is uncommon.

If I accept NYU now, will the other schools find out and stop considering my application? I know this is the case with ED stuff for first years…so it seems possible. Perhaps I can accept NYU and then bail on them if Williams accepts me?

*I don’t want to field questions about why I chose to leave Berkeley!

Thanks friends.

As far as I know, accepting the offer from one school will not affect admissions to the others. You can accept and then not attend, but you will lose your deposit. Also, you MUST contact the school you paid and are not going to, as you can have your acceptances rescinded if you pay deposits to two or more schools at the same time.

@samantha42 Thank you! For clarification, though; how would I get rescinded if I deposit to two institutions? Do they communicate with one another? If so, I still worry that they’d be able to do that with the mere acceptance alone, if that makes sense.

I’m not entirely sure how the two schools would figure that out, but it’s stipulated in the common app that you can’t do that or you can have your offers rescinded. As long as you contact NYU BEFORE enrolling at any other school, you’ll be fine - people do it all the time.
