Can you apply to TAG more than once?

Hello CC

I am considering applying to TAG in these days for admission to Fall 2017.

However I am considering extending my stay in community college for a year or so depending on how things turn out, and I was wondering if it is possible to apply to TAG again next year for Fall 2018 admission.

Is this possible?

I know you can’t TAG to multiple schools at once, but that isn’t my question.

Also, if I apply to competitive schools like UCB, UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, and then apply again next year, does that look particularly bad? Do any of those schools have a strict “once rejected, always rejected” policy?

What if I get admitted to schools like UCI, UCSB, UCSD, and UCD. Will those still admit me the following year if I were to defer for a year? (Does defer mean you agree to return/go to that school specifically or can it refer to you taking an extra year and just applying again?)

If I do stay an extra year, that will be my 4th year of community college, right after graduating from high school. I have never had a job, too. Does this look really bad to admissions counselors? (If I stay an extra year I will most likely get a job. Not sure what to do about financial aid like pell grants and cal grants though. Should I put those on pause if I take an extra year? I believe they only last for 6 years and I think I might end up 3 years at a 4 year university once I transfer since I hope to double major in physics and economics (or something like chemical physics instead of regular physics…still figuring that out. That’s part of the reason I’m considering staying another year – to complete the organic chemistry sequence and hopefully boost my admissions application to get into more competitive schools than I could probably get into now. Is there a true boost to be gained from taking another year? Or will it do more harm than good? I mean, can someone theoretically do anything in particular to gain admission to Stanford a year after not being a competitive applicant? [not saying that I have applied there before. still considering whether to apply for next fall or two take an extra year and apply for Fall 2018 as a second time-applicant…or not apply for 2017 at all and just apply solely for 2018])

Any help would be deeply appreciated. It’s hard to find counseling at my school, all of the slots fill up immediately while I’m in class. Don’t really have any mentors to ask about this kind of stuff either. And it’s hard finding any counseling about really competitive schools like Stanford in particular since our school is more prepared for state school transfers. Not that I have any realistic chance, but I can be stubbornly optimistic at times.

Each year you can re-TAG anywhere as you are reapplying.

You also can defer admissions for UCs. If you are accepted and decide not to attend that fall, then in subsequent years you would have to reapply all over.

@2016Candles you would or you wouldn’t have to reapply?

@Ohm888 That’s great to hear, thank you!

UC’s normally do not let you defer, only for Military service and special circumstances which have to approved. Assume you need to reapply each year.

@Gumbymom Alright, thanks! One more question about deferments… if you defer, do you HAVE to attend that same UC? Or can you still apply to other schools and attend another one. Are you locked into a contract with the school if you defer?

@otoribashi: Do not count on being able to defer enrollment at any UC. Deferred enrollment is reviewed on a case by case basis. If you are allowed to defer your enrollment, no you cannot apply to other schools or attend any other schools during this time. You have made a commitment to that school and you need to honor it.

I don’t think you can defer, but I could be wrong. I think they make you reapply.

@Ohm888 and @otoribashi: I have only seen one posting of a deferred TAG enrollment due to Military Service. I know as a Freshman admit, there are also only limited circumstances where you can defer enrollment, so it definitely should not be considered a common occurrence. I agree that probably 99.9% of the time, you would have to reapply.

@otoribashi
So sorry! I meant you CAN NOT defer admissions!

I accidentally input the wrong letter grade for a non-transferable course I took at a CSU for my TAG. I’ve already contacted my counselor and the college representative about this issue. Should I be concerned?
