Is it possible to become a Monroe Scholar later on in William & Mary...say sophmore year?

I guess I am just interested in living in Monroe hall, but didn't qualify for a Monroe Scholar.

No I don't believe you can, As for wanting to live in Monroe Hall, that's a pretty bad reason as most undergrad housing is better than it.

I believe that they cut the number of freshmen Monroe scholars by half, or more a couple years ago, and have opened it up to application during your freshmen year.

However, wanting to live in Monroe is not a good reason to want to be a Monroe Scholar. You might be able to live there anyway, but you shouldn't want a program for its housing (that, as mentioned, is nothing special and doesn't even have AC).

Wrong on both counts.

There are only approximately 75 incoming Monroe Scholars as Freshmen. After Freshmen year, a number of students are invited to apply to become Monroe Scholars based upon their GPA, and about 75 more are accepted as Monroe Scholars.

Secondly, not only is Monroe close to Wawa, but it's located on Old Campus, which is far more aesthetically pleasing. Being on Old Campus gives it proximity to all of the academic buildings on Old Campus, and to the UC. It's a great place to live.

its nothing to give up upperclassmen housing for though.

Monroe is a Freshman Hall. Unless you are an RA or RAR, it's impossible to live in Monroe as anything but a Freshman.

Yes, we know that, the whole point of the thread though was the kid wanted to be a monroe scholar as a SOPHMORE in order to live in Monroe.

I wasn't sure if Cardene knew that or not, since that was his question.

Actually, I am pretty sure that you can. I didn't know about the existence of Monroe Scholars until I received a letter saying that, if I attend, I'll be one (sweet). I distinctly recall reading somewhere in the letter being told that more people can become Monroe scholars after Freshman year.

That being said, I agree with everyone else that it's probably not worthwhile if you only want it for the housing. ^_~

Sorry, It thought Monroe was a special house reserved for Monroe scholars for all 4 years.

Never mind!
