Can you chance me for MIT?

MIT is a high reach.

Your academic achievements, while there are several, aren’t anything dazzling. Especially the 1st place in Palm Beach County - no award for local competitions will set you apart from the other engineering superstars that apply.

RSI on the other hand is extremely prestigious and competitive - your chances would be quite better if you listed acceptance to RSI on your college apps, although I’d still put it as a reach. Getting in is the hard part though. Acceptance rates for RSI are less than that of most top-tier schools last I checked.

Your app, while definitely demonstrating your interest in computer science, is not nearly successful enough to set you apart as well. In my school a good number of people have built successful apps - one of them is even hiring other high school interns to work for his app startup after getting funding. This isn’t to discourage you but rather to give you a realistic idea of the other engineering superstars which will be competing with you for a spot at MIT.

hate to say it, but your EC’s are really weak.

MathCounts… Although impressive, no college cares about middle school accomplishments (trust me, I was 11th in my state 4 Mathcounts- IK, just missed power round)

Piano… do something with it!!!

Work on that, do well on PSAT, then your chances will be greatly bolstered.

Tennis-- same story as piano

Taekwondo – They give out so many trophies, I don’t think there is much merit in those lol

I agree, ECs are weak and academics aren’t anything special either.

@DatUnreal and @lastspartan I never expected my achievements and EC’s to be good. Thanks for giving me a better picture on what I need to work. So what exactly should I do? Should I continue to develop my app, or should I strengthen my EC’s? The only achievements I only see myself putting is the national mu alpha trophies I recently earned, those are quite prestigious within itself. I’m only in sophomore year now, so I’ve got a great picture of my future goals until I submit my college app.

bump…

We’ve all seen this thread before. You know that you are not MIT material from what you describe. We understand that you are good at calculus, but please go away.

Computer Science at MIT + Competitive High School (Magnet doesn’t help.… overrepresented) + Asian (You didn’t say it, but I know )+ Florida = Super-competitive admissions

It’s too early for this, but do not get your hopes up. The Mu Alpha Theta is surprising geographically confined. You’re coming from a pool of über-overrepresented people, and you just don’t stand out.

^ Wow, that was terribly harsh. Some of it was warranted, but chill out, man.
@Vigilante13: You’re a sophomore - you can wait to build up your resume and desperately ask for ‘chances’ in your senior year. No one can say whether you will get into MIT or not, especially not at this point. There is no need to resurrect this thread

He actually did mention he was Asian DoingThings.

^^ Oh, I just saw his name on when I tried to find what school he went to.

ending the thread then
