Can you get recruited during a gap year?

Sport is squash

I guess it’s possible (anything’s theoretically possible) but I’m sure a coach would want to make 100% sure that you are maintaining some sort of serious regimen so that you aren’t losing anything athletically during that year. I imagine squash could fall into that category.

My only answer is that it’s certainly less likely than being recruited straight from school.

Are you doing a gap year abroad? I suggest taking a PG year at a prep school if that interests you. Many athletes who are looking to be recruited but want/need some extra time usually take PG (post-graduate) years at prep schools.

I can’t say for sure but like @meow I would agree that its possible. Definitely make sure you maintain or even improve your ability. I would also suggest entering major tournaments and sending your final placement as a reference for the coaches recruiting you.

My son had a teammate who was recruited during his PG year. The teammate took his PG year because he hadn’t been recruited by a school he liked during HS.

Where does one get info on a PG year? And do students usually apply for college during their senior year or PG year?

Squash is a winter sport and dominated by Ivys and NESCAC schools. The coaches at these schools make up their minds the summer prior to admission. Most of the major squash tournaments take place in the fall/winter, there are very few in the summer. So most of the squash lists for incoming freshman class of 2015 will take place between July and Oct of this year.

So with this in mind you may need to take TWO years off because of the timing of the admissions cycle.
