Well Im redoing my wardrobe for college, and I'm trying to decide which stores to shop at. I want high quality clothes. Please rank the following stores that I've compiled from most classy (1) to least classy (8). based on your opinion.

Banana Republic, Gap, Macy’s, American eagle, Old Navy.

I’ve never heard of Belk, and I think Marshalls and Kohls all depends on what you find. Macy’s too, they have tons of designer brands, but also some not so nice brands too.

J Crew has a lot of classy (but preppy) clothes.

I have 3 sons…one a senior in college, one a grad student, one independent adult.

What “look” are you going for?

My boys have generally done a lot of shopping at J Crew for casual-but-nice clothes, at Macy’s or Mens Wearhouse for less casual/business dress things. One also likes Eddie Bauer for some casual stuff, and one also likes Banana Republic.

My kids don’t like places like Marshalls or TJ Maxx (even though I do) because they don’t like to “hunt” for things.

Okay well… most classy to least classy (subjective) from your list
Macy’s (Since they sell quality clothes)
Banana Republic / AE
Marshalls (If you can find anything in that store)
Kohls
Old Navy / GAP (Not really great brands)
I don’t have any Belk stores in my area and don’t know anything about it so I can’t say.

I agree with the other posters that J Crew is a quality place to buy from. With that said, if you’re the type of person that wants to showcase what you’re wearing, J Crew might not be right for that since they don’t put their brand on their products. You could also consider Lacoste and Ralph Lauren, they have affordable clothes as well as Armani Exchange.

Out of your list, I would only say Banana Republic. Macy’s is a store that sells different brand names so that’s good. The rest are like kid’s brands IMHO that I personally would not wear. My young friends wear American Eagle, I never bought in Kohl’s. Old Navy and GAP were my childhood clothes that I would like to keep in my past lol.

Macy’s and Belk are stores, not clothing brand names.

Get one or two dark Levi’s jeans (most recommend 501). Stop with the t shirts, upgrade to polos and button downs; you have to dress like a man now. I get some polos from Macy’s; they are dirt cheap and good fabric. I also recommend GAP, and H&M. Fit is king. Make sure everything fits right. Just read the guides on the right of this page: [Clothes Make The Man](http://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice)

Of your choices, Banana Republic and American Eagle.

The problem with places like Old Navy, Marshalls, etc. is that the reason their popular is that thy are cheap. If your buying clothes for the sake of buying clothes, they’re okay, but if you are trying to look nice, those stores won’t cut it. Department stores like Macy’s are okay because of huge selection, but if your looking for a specific brand(Am Eagle, etc.), you should just go to the stores that carry that brand for better selection.

I’d rather not spend $35 on American Eagle or other ‘name brand’ cargo shorts.
I can get the same style at Kohls or Target for a lower price and probably on sale too.

You’ll look more professional in well fitting dress shirts made from Egyptian cotton, wool dress pants, leather oxfords, and silk ties. Stay away from flammable polyester and other petroleum based polymers that could melt into your skin.

Also get a pen made out of high grade metal such as aircraft aluminum or stainless steel. Stay away from plastic pens.

A month in and you will be wearing flip flops, sweatpants or basketball shorts, and a t shirt to every class. Don;t spend insane amounts of money on clothes

ooh i forgot to add jc penney. thanks for all the opinions btw. Im a a little ■■■■■■■■ when it comes to fashion and i wanna dress a little nicer. any other tips would help too!

I also agree with H&M - my BF shops there a lot and I’m usually impressed with their selection and prices. I have a few guy friends (whose styles I admire) who frequent Express, Nordstrom (or Nordstrom Rack), Armani Exchange, and J. Crew. Then again, I don’t know how they afford stuff from there regularly.

^ I remember going on a field trip to Nordstrom’s (for marketing class) and laughing at their prices. If you (any college student) can afford that kind of stuff, more power to ya. If you’re a typical college kid, then $100 polos may not be the wisest way to spend your money.

You can probably find clothes that you like at any of those stores. Generally i buy trendy things at cheaper stores and more high-quality, classic pieces from nicer stores. Buy what you like, what is comfortable and what is machine wash! You don’t want to have to deal with dry cleaning or a ton of hand washing in a dorm, so be sure to check the labels before you buy.

It ultimately depends on what you can afford/who you are. I grew up fairly well and I dress as such(BRrooks Brothers, Lacoste, Vineyard Vines, etc.). Out of those I’d say Belk and Macy’s… maybe Banana Republic for khakis or something. The rest are kind of childish and are aimed at a different audience for the most part. I’d also caution you against cargo shorts but they seem to be beloved around here so go with what you like.
