I am a current Rutgers student in the Pharmacy program with a presidential scholarship. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Now for my question, can you live off campus and have the presidential scholarship pay for your housing?

I realize on the website it says $11,500 if the student declines to live off campus, but somewhere else I read you can argue for Rutgers to pay for you to live off campus.

Does anybody know who I should contact to discuss this matter further?

You are only able to get the $11,500 (exact amount varies) which the Presidential Scholarship allocates towards room and board in order to live off campus starting in your junior year. If you opt not to use university housing either freshman or sophomore year, they just reduce your scholarship.

If this is possible, how do you inform the scholarship office/housing that you will be living off campus, and how do they allocate funds to you?

I don’t have a link because the policy was delineated on a form I got sometime in like March or April before I enrolled. I reconfirmed that the policy was correct in an email to the admissions department last year. I’m currently a junior and live off campus, so when it came time to submit the term bill, it showed a credit on the account since I had not selected on campus housing. After confirming the term bill, I received a refund check in late September. There’s no need to make any special arrangements if you opt to live off campus; it’s all done on the term bill.

Well 13k is a little high. If you are in Pharmacy, then after tuition and fees you’re looking at around 9k a year which you pocket if you opt to commute (i.e. not live on campus and not have a meal plan). And yeah it’s that simple you just get your check and do whatever you like with it. You can also set up direct deposit and it goes straight in your bank account.

The terms of the scholarship are what prevents it. I don’t really see them being negotiable, but by all means you can try. You can PM me if you like.

The one time I had a question regarding scholarship terms, I tried the financial aid office but was then directed to the admissions office. Admissions got back to me quickly by email. Once again, I doubt you will be able to change the terms of a scholarship by just negotiating. Keep in mind that the dates for the housing lottery are fast approaching, so if you are going to contact them, do so quickly.
