My class rank is well under the top 10 percent of a 800+ students. I might even be in the top 5 percent, but I'm not sure.
I live in San Diego, California and I'm Vietnamese.

I'm not sure how much of a boost being a California resident gives you in UC admissions, but I heard UC (especially Berkeley) admissions were pretty tough this year..
and duke would be a reach.

xerocreative:

UCB: Super Reach
UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCI: Match
Duke: Super Reach

really? can you guys give me advices what should i do? whether its more EC, etc.

I think you guys are being a little harsh; you have plenty of AP and Honors classes to go around...and i see a couple of B's here and there, but i dont think that will hurt your chances too much. if you raise your SAT score, maybe to a 2200+, get some more community service hours, stick with your clubs, and if you can get some kind of leadership position, you should have a decent shot at UCLA, UCB, UCSD. also, California residency should help! (and remember, ESSAYS are big too. they are sometimes overlooked, but they can be your chance to show them you deserve a spot at their school.) I agree with flopsy though...UCI, UCR should be matches.

you don't even know your new SAT score for real, do you?

Erm. This is my friend time doing this. Can you explain to me reach, super reach, big reach, safety, etc. Please?

The EC's and rank are fine. But your GPA, SAT, and SATII's are all below average for UCLA, UCB, UCSD, and Duke. GPA and test scores are most important. UCI you're in and with luck maybe UCSD (i see lower stats get in UCSD often).

but i still dont get reach, super reach, big reach, safety.

These are the meanings of my terminology based on admission odds:

Super Reach: ~10%
Reach: ~30%
Slight Reach: ~40%
Match: ~60%
Safe Match: ~80%
Safety: ~90%
Super Safety: ~99%

In my opinion,

UCB-reach
UCLA-reach
UCSD-reach
UCI-match
Duke-reach

Of course, I could be wrong! The UCs might be a bit easier since you're a resident.

i live in SD cali too. what school you go to?

anyways. that oSAT was really low, but they wont see it (UC), and if u get what u predict, 2040 nSAT.. then youre alright.
and you took a lot of APs..

reach: UCLA DUKE match: UCSD safe: UCI

Taking into account Cal residency, I'd say:
reaches-Duke, Berkeley
match-UCLA
safety-UCSD

You might want to up those SAT scores. As for ECs, do you have any leadership positions?

Even with Cal residency, I'd say:

Upper Reach - Duke
Reach - Berkeley
Variable Based on Student Population Match/Reach - UCLA
Match - UCSD
Safety - UCI

Then again, since you're a junior, you still have a lot of time ahead of you--time to improve your scores, do internships, etc. So make the most of it! Good luck:)

UCs admission gets harder and harder each year. a kid at my school this year has 4.2 GPA, 1400 SAT, and cal resident, and he was rejected at UCSD, UCLA, and UCB.
I also got rejected at three of those schools and my stats are: 3.9 UC GPA, 1350 SAT.
so for you I would say, they all reach except UCI.

You're not going to college now. You're still a junior! So retake those SAT IIs and make sure you have some teachers who would write you recs.

Why Duke? Why not look at some private schools where you would have a better chance and might get some aid?

Yeah. I'm also curious about that. I can understand the UCs, since you live in Cali, but why Duke, of all the schools?

Most of my relatives went to Duke University. And one of my close friend is going there too. Duke is a great school if you want to be a doctor. I also am taking 2 more New SAT during my junior year and one more SAT IIs.
