Canadian 2016 Applicants to US Schools

That’s ridiculous. His/her visa is not going to be denied. If you think you’ll have visa issues you should not be applying ED.

nebbalish’s strategy has nothing to do with visas. S/he just prefers a different school in Canada to his/her ED choice and plans on reneging on the ED agreement if s/he’s admitted there.

It wouldn’t be okay to apply RD to Harvard after getting into Columbia via ED, so why should s/he be allowed to apply to McMaster?

@Lastcall - sorry… my bad.
I was just trying to argue that one can keep his offers in other countries including Canada while holding on to their ED choice. ED agreement can only apply to schools in the USA

@ everyone: Wow, this debate just got really intense. But it isn’t relevant anymore, seeing as nebbalish posted earlier that she was rejected from Columbia. (If you’re reading this, nebbalish, I’m so sorry to hear that :()

I think you mean that you’re allowed to apply to other schools in Canada until the day that ED decisions are out. I think that’s right. You’re also allowed to apply to schools that offer non-restricted EA in the US. You might even be able to file your RD applications in the US early (not sure, wouldn’t be wise as you probably wouldn’t get refunds if your ED school admits you). However if you’re admitted via ED you cannot file further applications and you need to withdraw any that are being considered. You agree on this point. If you’re deferred or rejected you get a release from the ED agreement.

Just because you’re allowed to apply to other schools in Canada even after signing the ED agreement doesn’t mean that the ED agreement only applies to American schools. What is this idea of the agreement applying to other schools in different countries anyway? It applies to you (you’re obligated to matriculate), and therefore all other applications you file.

Yes, you can apply to other schools even after submitting an ED application. Someone might apply ED to Brown and EA to UVA. That’s fine. Someone else might apply ED to Columbia and apply to UBC at around the same time (not sure if this is possible but substitute any Canadian school). That’s okay too.

In any case the ED agreement still applies (in the US, Canada, the UK, etc.). You seem to think that I think that if you apply ED somewhere, then you can’t apply to schools in your own country that have early deadlines. No one is saying that.

hi guys. just would like to ask what schools offer good scholarships in canada for international students. thanks

Yes…this has gotten very intense. As calgirl wrote, I did not get accepted into Columbia ED. I suspect it was asking for FA that shot that one down.

Lastcall, alwaysamom and Desertfox: thank you for your discussion. It certainly cleared up some questions I didn’t know I even had!

Deferred at Harvard! Better than I was expecting, especially considering the fact that I was re-applying this year, and Harvard knew that I had applied before and was outright rejected then. Perhaps it’s a sign that my application this year is more of a step in the right direction. :)

im just wondering are yall applying for FA or are you paying full blow? im just wondering becuase im looking for somewhere to apply as a transfer because the school that im going to right now in the USA as a freshmen isnt giving me any FA? i got a 3.9 as a freshmen right now

To add my 2 cents, I applied to UPenn Wharton Huntsman (deferred), and applied to Oxford. I contacted the Admissions Officer of UPenn on the beginning of December, so that I could get primary source information on this issue, rather than fiddling with already established facts as half-truths. ED agreement is only binding for US schools, and does not bind any schools outside of the US, including, but not excluding Canada and UK.

If I had gotten in both at Oxford and UPenn (which I didn’t for UPenn), then I would be stuck with a hard, but moral dilemma to go through. Hard because it is the best of both continents, and moral, because I had understood the conditions of ED agreement fully before binding myself to UPenn in the USA.

Anyways, apologies for hacking into previous debate. Good luck to all on the RD round, and I am sure at the end of the day, we will get through in smiles.

:)

Hey guys! Thought I’d revive this thread. How’s everyone holding up?

Meh. I just don’t want to wait for decisions anymore…

Same… I have a final tomorrow and I am so screwed :(

I hope you do well! Sometimes feeling “screwed” doesn’t end up predicting your actual performance on the exam.

Thanks  It went pretty well considering how much time I spent on CC that night…
Less than 2 months until decisions!

lol, i’m a Canadian Citizen studying in Hong Kong. Hows it going?

Still keeping busy for one more month… Harvard and Brown interviews are coming up for me, so I have those to look forward to.

Scratch that - Brown’s interview deadline already passed. But I have a Skype interview in a few days with a 3rd Harvard interviewer (long story - my application was re-assigned 2 times since I’m currently not in the US).

Thought I’d throw my 2 cents in
Ontario resident here applied to Cornell, tufts, BU and northeastern for life sciences and just received admittance to northeastern honors program:)

^Congratz lol

Already? Congrats! Just wondering, has anyone been invited for a Yale alumni interview? I’ve gotten Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, UChicago but not Yale :(
