I am currently a student in a US high school with an unweighted GPA of 2.87. I plan to attend a universities in canada, most likely in Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, and want to know if universities accept a US GPA or Canadian GPA. Canada has a different grading system and I have the equivalent of a 3.38 there. I would have a much easier time getting into a university if they accepted a Canadian GPA, but there is nowhere that says which one they take. Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Major Canadian universities are familiar with the US GPA and evaluate American applicants compared to other American applicants. A 2.87 GPA means McGill is out of reach. UToronto and UBC would be high reaches too.

Your best option is to call the school directly. I say this a lot because when I was applying to colleges and had questions that what I did. It’s the fastest way to get an answer, you are going right to the source, the admission reps can help you and on top of that you are showing interest in the school. I am also sure that the college will redo your GPA with their formulas to create a new GPA

Your “US GPA” is the same as your “Canadian GPA”. The percentage values that correspond to the grades may differ based on province but you cannot convert your USA % grades to Canadian % based gpa grades ie an 80% in Ontario is an A-, whereas that is a B- in the US, however in Canada, class averages are generally in the mid to low 70s (a US C/- or a Canada B/-). In short it is much harder to achieve an 80% in Canada (in this example Ontario) than in the US and the Canadian Universities know this (for that matter different provinces have different grading schemes and some are more similar to the US) so they will look at your US gpa, there is no conversion, Your B- average is still a B-.
