Canadian student concerning when to take SAT in 12th grade

Hey guys, this is my first time using CollegeConfidential, a big 'Hello" to those of you who will be answering my question :) and I'm looking forward to receive all of your amazing advices.

I am currently a junior student (11th grade) in Canada, Toronto. I'm planning to apply to the States for university. The problem is, I haven't done the SAT yet. I know that I should be taking it in my junior year, beause that's what MOST of students are doing. My original plan was to take it in June, but I have a huge piano exam coming up, and school exams will also be cramming up at the same time.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/312472-general-tips-when-take-sat-grade-12-a.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/312472-general-tips-when-take-sat-grade-12-a.html</a></p>

I was reading comments from the above post, and I pretty much have the similar problem, the only difference is that I will not be taking SAT in June, but instead, I'm planning to take my first-ever SAT in October, and maybe SAT II in November or December?

I am pretty sure that I will be taking it in October, but when should I take the second one? Or should I just do three? One in Octoer, November, and December as well?

Sorry if my problem is a bit confusing :S I really appreciate your patience!

Last but not least, please be patient and give me some advice and recommendations! :)

Thank you all!

It depends on how confident you are. Why not take one in March since you’ve missed the one in January and if you can’t day 5hat in May or June. If you are sure you don’t need to retake, it would be fine to wait till October.

hello! Thank you so much for answering  I don’t think I’m taking in March, because I’m really not that confident at this point. I’m thinking of study more and maybe do more practice tests during summer, hopefully that would be helpful.

Again, thank you!

Waiting until you’re a senior is a bad idea. How will you even know what schools are possibilities if you don’t know how you do on tests? And you really won’t have time to bring it up if you don’t do as well as you think. Definitely take it in March. If you are a good student and not long away from math then just go through a review book between now and March. Most schools superscore SAT so the other advantage is if you see a weakness this time, you can focus on that part the next time.

Hello dear scmom12, thank you for your reply :)

I know it’s a bad idea doing it in my senior year, but I’m really NOT confident doing it in March or in my junior year, I know I can always TRY, but I’m just too scared :S

Since you mentioned about school possibilities, I already know the schools that I wish to apply in the US (I live in Canada). I’ve done my research online and found out about the requirements, programs, etc.

My plan is to study SAT more during the summer and take it in October when we return school. I know it’s kind of a rush, but I’d rather have more time focusing on preparation. Febuary and March are filled with competitions and activities, May and June are going to be hectic because of exams.

Afterall, I really appreciate where you said “focus on the weak part”. I’m not really an exam person, I just need sometime to prepare myself more and hopefully can reach my best condition. Again, thank you! :D

How about in May? It may be stressful if you have AP exams coming up, but the May one seems more reasonable in your situation. If I were you, I would at least take the exam in May so that I would know approximately which schools I can apply to and research those schools in the summer.

Best of luck!

It’s nice to take at least one real proctored SAT to help guide your studying. I took my first SAT in May of junior year and ordered some sort of test reporting that sent my a copy of the exam and my answers after scores were released so I could see exactly what I got wrong and why. It helped me study for my next SAT in October and I ended up improving 50 points in one of the sections. It really guided my studying over the summer.

If you really feel that you can’t take the SAT in your junior year, I recommend taking the SAT IIs in junior year so you have another opportunity to take the SAT in senior year. Plus if they’re in something you’re taking now the topics will be fresher in your mind.
