Cannot afford college at all

Hello!

In need of help here from my fellow colleagues :confused: I believe I cannot afford college at all. My parents are both nurses and make about 90 to 100k a year gross but its not enough to support funding for my college education because we only make enough to survive. My family is also not able to take out any types of loans so I am really at a disadvantage, Iā€™ve applied to a bunch of scholarships throughout the year but still no response. Iā€™ve also tried applying for CA Dream Act to get federal aid but I didnt qualify either, and lastly I cannot get a job due to my circumstances. Any tips, should I continue to apply for scholarships?

Are you a DACA person? Are you a citizenā€¦or notā€¦of the U.S?

Do your parents work in the United States?

What is the citizenship status of your parents?

What state do you live in (CA?) and how long have you lived there?

Since your in CA you could start at a community college. If you carefully plan your courses and take advantage of counseling, you can have an easy transfer experience. Do you live near a CC or 4 year campus so you can commute? Why are you unable to work at all? You could always take a couple of years off to work and save before even starting at the CC if you needed to, though minimum student loans should cover all costs at a CC even barring any other aid or working.

If you didnā€™t qualify for CA Dream Act, it is unlikely youā€™ll qualify for other aid. The CA Dream act is not federal aid but state aid. Federal aid requires you to be a citizen or permanent resident. A school could give you its own funds, but probably not any from a public source.

Is that because you arenā€™t documented? It is going to be very difficult to go to college if you canā€™t work.

There are some states now providing free tuition. We donā€™t know your life circumstances or whether youā€™d quality for merit aid. If you provide more information about the things you allude to but donā€™t discuss, you may get more helpful suggestions.You can be straight forward since this is an anonymous site. But if you want helpful suggestions people need to know why you canā€™t get a job, how may people in your family,etc.

@milgymfam

If this student lives in CA within commuting distance of a community collegeā€¦then MAYBE he can attend that and it will be affordable.

BUT the four year public universities in CA very well might not be.

Agree with above poster. We really donā€™t have enough information to be helpful.

According to OPā€™s other Threads, they are a transfer student targeting Cal State Long Beach. @LouisGC: How have you been paying for your current community college?

Major: Health Care Administration
Transfer GPA: 3.4
AA-T/AS-T: Yes AS for Transfer
Pre-reqs: Need 3 more but projected to be completed by the end of Spring 2019. Just need Microecon, Physio, and Medical terminology
Golden 4: Finished, A, A, A, A
Local Area: Orange County, neighbor area.

@Gumbymom

What would it take for this student to get instate tuition?

Cost of attendance is in the $36,000 a year range for OOSā€¦

@thumper1: According to OPā€™s information, they are attending an in-state CA community college in Southern California but not in the local service for CSU Long Beach. I am not sure if they are a CA resident or if they are paying OOS fees to attend the CC?? Waiting for a more complete response from the OP and further information before drawing any conclusions.

@Gumbymom

Hope the OP clarifies!

Just got accepted turned it all my required documents for in state tuition! @thumper1 @gumbymom finished my ca dream act hopefully I get aid my EFC (estimated family contribution) was about 17000 I also applied for ā€œStudent Emergency Intervention and Wellness Programā€ at long beach if I am able to get that they will grant me a maximum of $500.

@thumper1 @Gumbymom I am not a daca person, trump ended the program right before I was about to submit it

So @LouisGC for clarification, you are in-state for CSULB but outside the local service area? If your EFC is $17,000, then your chances for financial aid at CSULB is very low. Did you run the net price calculator for CSULB?

Not yet :frowning: my parents AGI is around 105k and income tax 7k but I donā€™t know how they would be able to afford it. My parents hold no assets or anything I have no assets even put $200 in their bank account for the ca dream act and my AGI is still high.

@Gumbymom yes I am in state but not local

@Gumbymom just did it

Academic Year: 2016-17

Estimated tuition and fees $6,460

  • Estimated room and board charges
    (Includes rooming accommodations and meals)
    $12,910
  • Estimated cost of books and supplies $1,898
  • Estimated other expenses
    (Personal expenses, transportation, etc.) $2,924

Estimated total cost of attendance: $24,192

  • Estimated total grant aid:
    (Includes both merit and need based grant and scholarship aid from Federal, State, or Local

Donā€™t know whether I should change or update anything on my dream act but I would not know what to change since I listed most of the stuff as 0

Your parents have no college savings? With a $105k income, they should be able to help you out with some expenses. So how have you been paying your community college courses? Did you apply to your local CSU where you can commute?

You can take out $6500 in loans along with any summer earnings which could cover tuition and books by commuting to your local CSU.

Run the NPC now and see what kind of estimate you get.

This studentā€™s parents are making $105k per year but are undocumented? And heā€™s undocumented? And trying to go to a school that is not in his area?

I donā€™t see where the money will come from. I also donā€™t see how/why a FAFSA was completed generating an EFC of $17k when this student canā€™t get federal aid.

Correct @twoinanddone I cannot take out loans, both my parents are RNs but theyā€™re almost in their mid 60s, theyā€™re paying rent for the house, bills etc were basically living off each paycheck. I reported all their w-2s and 1040s but idk how my EFC is so high considering we have no assets, $ in bank etc @Gumbymom I was lucky to get BOG waiver from my CC so my classes were paid for I only paid for books and yes I am commuting moving in Orange County area to be closer to LB any advice or help will be great!!

Your parents are undocumented registered nurses working in this country? Really?
