can't decide (UW vs. UCSD)

I got into UW and University of California-San Diego, but i cant make up my mind on which college to choose.
the only con of UCSD is that i got in for winter quarter so i would not be guaranteed housing and i would have to do the UCSD extension program...
And UW is #1 in primary care... and a little less expensive than UCSD.
Can anyone help me?

If it matters, I live in San Diego and got into UCSD. However, I would rather pay much more, spend money on rent (i am a transfer), give up my sunshine and beach, to go to school in the rain.

The reason why I want to go to UW is the reason why I want to go to UW. My reason can't really be your reason... know what I mean. However, maybe I can help you with your decision...

First, what do you want to study? (was it primary care?) Are you SURE you want to study that? Also, why do you think you would have to do the extension program... is that what the UCSD said?

I want to do premed... so UW has a better graduate program for me. But UCSD also has a comparable med program... and i love the location. but for SD:
I would either have to do the extension program or take community college courses during the fall quarter to make up for the classes i will miss. that is what UCSD requires. and i am not guaranteed housing, so i might have to pay a lot of money for off campus housing...

so most of this is pointing me in the direction of UW.
Should i give up going to UCSD?

Hmm... i don't know much about the program(s) at both schools... so, unfortunately, I am gonna have to pass it on to someone else.

One thing is for certain... San Diego is a pretty rockin' place. UCSD, however, isn't in the BEST part (it is in a very, very nice place, but not too exciting)--but the city is great (you may want a car, however).

Seems like the extension/community college thing might be a hassle... but it probably wouldn't be that bad. I don't know... I wish I could be more help.

thanks for replying

i think i'll go to UW...
it seems to be less of a hassle.

thanks

Don't make a decision just for the sake of making a decision. Try posting in the UCSD section... see what they have to say about things. I have always heard that UCSD is good for premed... but I am not sure about graduate programs. And it may be good for you to get away from the Northwest for a nice change in environment.

I would rather you make a decision that you feel confident about... not an "oh well, i guess" decision. :-)

I got into UW and UCSD too. I used to live in Seattle and now I'm currently living in San Francisco. I can tell you for sure that both colleges have different atmosphere. It all depends on what you want from the college experience.

I'm going to UCSD because they have a stellar biology program (their bioengineering is 3rd in the country) and I like the general atmosphere more than that of UW because everybody there seems a lot happier than the students I see in UW. However, UW also has a great biology program too but if you want a change of scenary, I suggest UCSD. They also gave me a full ride, as opposed to UW. Their six college system also makes a big state school seems much more personal (they attempted this from Cambridge and Oxford). I've only visited there twice but the provost of my college already knows me name when he saw me the second time around. The students there are also very studious, but if you favor more of a party scene, then UW is the place because of UCSD's strict "no drinking" policy.

BTW, I'm going in for premed too. Anyway, I think either one is a great choice and it's really what you make of it. I definately suggest visiting the colleges before making your decisions and perhaps get in touch with people who are going there so they can tell you what their college experiences are like.

good advice.

So, you think the rain and gloom gets in the student body's head? Sunshine San Diego may behind those smiles at UCSD, huh? hmmm...

Yes, i did go to visit both the colleges. I thought the overall atmosphere at UCSD was a little more happier (maybe because of the sun and the beaches nearby) but I am from portland... so the rain isn't new to me.
But thanks for the advice, it really did help me.
I think im more confident in going with UW because missing an entire quarter and having to pay more to live off campus for my first year if i choose UCSD would really get to me.
Also, UW takes care of their own... so i would have a better chance of getting into their med program if i attended the university for my undergrad.
and being ranked higher for med, UW is the better place to go.
i'll just miss out on some sun... :-(
Thanks again.

I don't think that UW takes care of their own. I've heard that graduate school would rather take students from a different university than one of their own because they want more diversity in the graduate level than the undergraduate level.

There's UCSF in CA, which is one of the premier medical and research institutions in the country. I was aiming to go there or some schools back east once I finished with my undergraduate education. It is easier to get into UCSF from UCSD because you'd be a California resident after you graduate and they give a little advantage to in state students.

Anyway, you've made a fine choice with UW too because I had a hard time deciding between the both. It was down to friends at UW or full ride at UCSD. Either way, we're both going to go to really good colleges in the end so we didn't lose anything by deciding any one way.
