Can't Decide where to transfer to, HELP!! only got a week to decide!!

Hey guys, i need some major help. I'm stuck on where i want to transfer to. I'm want to become a plastic surgeon so i know what ive got ahead of myself. Right now im at Cabrillo college and im getting my AA by the end of the semester. I'm going to be transfering into a school as a junior and im having trouble deciding where to apply to. I'm filling out the TAG application for the UC system and unfortunately you can only use it on UC. my GPA right is a 3.0 solid but i know by the end of the year i can get it up to a 3.2, 3.4 ish. The three UC's ive narrowed it down too are UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UCSB. I originally was going to transfer to SDSU becuase i knew i had a great shot to get in and it's a very fun school. I did research and found that medical schools look at SDSU diplomas poorly so that kinda unmotivated me. The reason why i have a dilemma is becuase i want to go to a school that yes has education but also isnt boring. Yeah sdsu is a gnarly party school and has that rep which sucks becuase yeah i do want to go to a fun school but that hurts me huge when it comes to med school. So i need help deciding which school i should apply to. which school would you say has both great academics and a great social scene? i do not want to be bored at school unless thats the way its gotta be for me to suceed in medicine. if thats the case, ill accept it but i need to hear it from you guys first.

other schools im applying to are UCLA, USC (which i was accepted into out of HS but couldnt attend becuase of family reasons) Penn State (random i know but i heard its a great school and a very good social scene) and SDSU (just cus i wanna see if i would get accepted and if its not a big deal to attend, i may go there)

The med schools i do plan on applying to in a few years are the following med schools for these schools. UCLA, USC, Stanford, Vanderbilt, UCSF, University of miami.

Will any of those undergrad schools be more favorable to attend for the med schools i want to apply to in a few years? will attending SDSU really make UCLA/Stanford admission people throw my app in the trash? i mean ofcourse i will continue to get stronger grades than i have now becuase i do understand the true importance of suceeding to impress.

Also im still undecided on majors because i hear two sides to this story. One side says its smart to declare a scientific major becuase it will better prep you for the MCATS where others say non scientific majors will make you "stand out" to med schools when applying.
Sorry im asking a lot but i am stressing like crazy and only have 7 more days to submit my TAG app.

Help guys?

If your current college GPA is 3.0, you will probably have to make a 4.0 for the rest of your college grades in order to have even a possibility of being accepted to any medical school.

Medical schools generally have a reputation of caring more about MCAT and GPA than about what four year school you attend or what major you do.

yeah i figured. any thing else yall can say to help sway a decision on a school to transfer to though?

3.0 at Community college does not bode well for getting accepted into medical school. Plastics is one of the hardest specialties to be accepted into only after completing 5-6 years of surgery. I would worry about being competitive in college before worrying about acceptance to medical school. start studying for your MCATS now!

^^^

I agree with the above. A 3.0 at a CC (or anywhere) does not bode well for the next 2 years and for med school acceptance. The UC classes will be harder, so why do you think you’d get a better GPA at a more difficult school?

BTW…Do the UCs take spring transfers? I thought they only took fall, but I could be wrong about that.

What classes/grades did you get at your CC in pre-med pre-reqs?

*Penn State (random i know but i heard its a great school and a very good social scene) *

Will your family pay the high OOS rates?

I think you need to apply also to the lower tier UCs (merced, riverside, santa cruz) and maybe a Cal Poly.

I got A’s and B’s in all my pre med pre reqs. its the “other” general ed classes that kept down a little, getting C’s in some of them.

and i feel like its not the difficulty of the class thats making me result in these grades, its more personal issues, outside of school stuff that has gotten in the way. i know if i put full dedication to it, i can achieve great grades like i did in high school.

Medical School only care about individuals GPA and MCAT. Sorry, but that is the fact. And please check out studentdoctor if you are serious about this, take everything on the net with grant of salt.
" I did research and found that medical schools look at SDSU diplomas poorly " Give me the source to back it up? Try post that on SDN, see how people will react. rolling eyes

I have read at multiple websites including this one where people have stated that schools like SDSU who have reputations for being “party” schools are not looked at as being as “prestigious” as lets say a UC or a private school like USC.

Having an average GPA but scoring very well on the MCAT’s also must been something right?
