Hi all,
I am a current CAP student and have a few questions to any former CAP students or parents.
- Does it state that you are a CAP student on your application? If not, how do admissions differentiate between CAP students and ordinary external transfers?
- What program did you apply to and how was your transition to UT Austin?
- Did most of your CAP friends make it over to UT Austin? Do you believe that most CAP students make it into their (non-liberal arts) major?
Thank you!
I did the cap program last year and I’m enrolled at UT now.
- it does not state that you are a CAP student on your app. If you don’t accept a LAC major then you have to apply with all the other external transfers. There is no difference.
- I applied to Moody College of Communication and I got in so that’s where I am now. The transition was pretty seamless. For me, the academics were the same and I got straight A’s at UT my first semester. UT does its best to get you acclimated and involved. Just make sure you join organizations and keep up with school work and you’ll be fine.
- most of my CAP friends actually didn’t make it over to UT Austin. They ended up really liking the UT school we were at, made friends, and didn’t wanna leave. a couple of people didn’t complete the required 30 hours/ didn’t make the right GPA.
I believe that most CAP students eventually make it into their non liberal arts major. A lot of them do liberal arts their sophomore year, but they’re making A’s and shouldn’t have a problem internally transferring into their major. I went straight into my major, but a lot of CAP students don’t.
- I did not have any backup schools. I would’ve just stayed at my CAP school if something had gone wrong and I couldn’t transfer to Austin.
@kcollege1995 - what major in Moody are you?
@rach98n Communication Studies

So I was recently offered to do the CAP program and be able to get a guaranteed admission to UT Austin for my sophomore year. I’m just going to say that UT Austin is my dream school and I will do just about anything to get me there. I have three options. I can do the CAP program, I can go to ACC and transfer, or I can go to A&M (I was already accepted). I don’t like A&M, I visited and it just wasn’t for me, so I don’t think that is much a choice. CAP would be perfect, but I took IB classes and will (hopefully) have tons of college credit when I graduate from high school this year. It says that available CAP courses may be very limited to students who have college credit, so I’m kind of thinking that it would sort of be a waste of time and money. Does anyone know if the college credit gets accepted by UT Austin when I get transferred sophomore year? My other option would be to go to ACC, this is cheap and very easy to get my GPA up. I could get at least sophomore standing in a year and transfer as a junior. I just feel like ACC isn’t a true college experience and I’m not guaranteed admission to UT Austin if I transfer from ACC. I would ev crushed if that happened. What would you guys do?
@Class2020ru I’m sorry I received this so late. Honestly, I would recommend ACC but since its the middle of may you have likely made your decision already. I hated the CAP program and I wouldn’t recommend it. If you can still go to ACC then definitely do that. You can go to ACC and try to be a spring transfer. It may not be the college experience but its what you make it. And you can get an apartment and still be near UT austin to meet people. The CAP class requirements make it difficult (depending on your major) to transfer anywhere else if you don’t make it into UT Austin.
@Class2020ru Not sure if this was too late or not but I was in the exact situation as you. I have all IB credits and a few AP credits. It depends on what you want personally. I turned down Purdue for CAP, though I somewhat regret it now. If what kcollege1995 is saying is right, and if UT is the most important agenda for you then CAP is a good choice. If you want to get started on your major and graduate as fast as possible then A&M might be a better choice. I never ended up using the IB credits I got from hs, the problem is that if you want to get into a specific major (as CAP you are allowed one major of your choice and a COLA major) it has “recommended” classes you should take regardless of whether or not you have credit. Had I used all my IB credits, I would’ve ran out of classes to take. Hope this helps.
@kcollege1995 Hey! If you dont mind, what classes did you take your first semester at UT? Rather, what easy classes would you recommend for internal transfer students to take in order to get a pretty high GPA? Thanks!(:
