CAP Question: Credits and AP

Hi there.

Well I found out I got CAP'd the first day of March. And I'm sort of leaning towards it due to my financial situation (I got accepted into some OOS schools).

My main concern though is the 30 Hour credit requirement.

I know that credits you get from AP tests won't count for that and you have to get it from the approved list. My question is:

If UTSA accepts my AP scores as credit and puts it on my transcript, and I take other classes to SATISFY my 30 hour requirement, will UT award me my credits when I transfer over? Or will I need the required score regardless of whether or not UTSA accepts it?

(For example: I get a 3 on a certain test. UTSA will accept that 3 but UT only accepts 5's. If UTSA awards me with credits on my transcript for that test, will UT accept it too when I transfer over the next year?)

I hope I made this clear enough for everybody to understand. Thank you in advance!

I don’t know exactly, but I don’t think that will work. Talk to an adviser. CAP students are processed differently so I am sure they have a way of safe guarding against this.

Interesting question! According to this website:

[Common Transfer Credit Issues - Credit by Exam](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/problems/cbe.html)

it looks like the answer is no. However, that is definitely one I would call admissions about. You want to make sure you know what the answer is!

My child was in the same situation. UTSA will list the classes as CR (credit) on your transcript. UT accepted all of the credits and did not look at any of the actual AP scores.

If you have enough hours, you can apply as a straight transfer (not CAP) for the Spring semester. It is a rush and there are some financial consequences, but it does give you another option.

I’m currently a CAP student @ UTSA. @ Summer orientation they told us if our AP credit is accepted by UTSA, UT is forced to accept it too when you transfer. However…the CAP program and the people running it are sometimes ■■■■■■■■ so I’d honestly just call to make 100% sure.

The AP credit is accepted provided that the credit was already on the transcript of the capped school. so for example, if I have the course government on my college transcript, then I give the official transcript to UT and if there are 30 hours on there, then it counts.

At least that was how theloneranger answered my question about transfer credits when I asked. And I did ask the admissions dept. who said that same thing.

Thank you all for your help!

I did talk to an advisor, and she said that if UTSA accepts it as credit, then UT will have to accept it also.

Ok, so AP doesn’t count towards the 30 hours, but you can still get credit for it, right? Like let’s say I get a good score on the AP English and they accept, that means I won’t have to take that English class?

Correct, it will count as credit toward your graduation requirement, but not your 30 hour CAP requirement.

i read on here that if your CAP school list the credits on your transcript it will count

flatxca is correct. AP credit (awarded by the CAP school) and dual credit will count towards the graduation requirement, but the student must complete the specified 30 hrs in residence during Fall/Spring at the CAP school.

This question concerns a freshman entering this fall. If you missed out on AP credit by say getting a 3 instead of a 4, but community college accepts the 3, could you not claim the credit at community college and transfer it to UT?

^ lol I’m gonna try that!
