CAP vs. Texas State

So after going through all of the schools I've been accepted into, my decision comes down to doing the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP), which would be one year at UTSA before transferring to UT, or attending Texas State all four years. I want to major in journalism, and I've heard good things about both schools. I'm torn between which school to go to. I am aware of how amazing UT is but I also feel like Texas State is a good match for me.

Some things I look for in a school are:
- Feeling like I'm part of the student community and being able to participate in on campus activities. I've been a part of the spirit organization at my high school all four years (cheerleading/dance team) so I love participating in school spirit and all of that, it's very important to me.
- Opportunities for advancement. I'd like to have opportunities in the journalism on campus and internships.

If I were doing CAP I feel like since I'd be living at home and not on campus I'd be missing out on a lot, and also since I wouldn't complete my freshmen year at UT I won't have the experience I've been dreaming of, rooming and hanging out with and making new friends and experiencing new things. I feel like once freshman year was over and I moved to UT I would have to start all over again getting used to it and making new friends again, and adjusting to my classes and whatnot. I think at Texas State I'd be there all four years and would become more comfortable.

What do you guys think? I'm just listing things off the top of my head, I need help making a pros and cons list. Any opinions?

I think you should do CAP if you’re at all worried about the prestige of your degree because UT Austin and Texas State aren’t even almost in the same ballpark, but if you don’t want to stay at home, I’d suggest looking at CAPping at another UT… perhaps Dallas, Arlington etc…

I don’t know about journalism in particular and know that UT would be considered the “better” school. However, Texas State has some very strong program, don’t know if journalism is one of them. Check out the department, ask to speak with a faculty member about opportunities. You also want to see how much is going on during the weekends at Texas State. In the past, it had the reputation of a suitcase school with everyone going home on the weekend. Don’t know if that is still the case. You really need to find out if Texas State will offer all the things you don’t think you’re going to get at UTSA and will have to start over with at UT.
