Capped Majors at UC Berkeley.

I just read in another thread that we are admitted into a college at UC Berkeley rather than a specific major.

I've been thinking about switching from Statistics to Economics if that is the case.

I found this:

L&S Major - Capped Majors

So does that mean that after my first semester, I could switch to Economics if I'd like?

yes but you’ll need good grades in your stat/upperdiv econ class.

Wait so you can do a different major as long as you are accepted to that particular college? I applied as a MCB, does that mean I can do econ if I wanted to? What about from one college to another college within UCB?

I’m pretty sure you can’t switch schools, and you can’t just jump into a new major either. I know for econ, you need to have a certain combined GPA of the prereqs along with good grades in the upper div econ and stats class.

Tiberius, may i ask you why you want to switch to econ? I’m a stats major too

Coming in as a junior transfer, you must apply to declare the economics major in your FIRST semester, which would be the Fall for most. You must also register for the calculus- based stats class (Stats 20,21 or an upper-division like 131A) and 1 intermediate econ class (100A or B, or 101A), and of course pass them to be admitted to the major. Of course, there is not guarantee if you don’t do well in those classes.
