CONFUSED...ECON at UCB...???

"Admission to Berkeley with the stated intent to major in Economics does not
guarantee acceptance into the major. A departmental application is required.
Transfer students must apply to the major during the first four weeks of their
first semester."

This was from assist.org. What does that mean? What is exactly is the application process? What do they look at? I thought you dont need to apply for Economics...

Oh btw, I'm asking for a friend... so I apologize in advance for being so clueless.

When you apply to Cal as a transfer or have a major declared even if you are currently a student there... you must apply to the specified school under that major to make everything official.

For example:
Let's say i applied as a transfer applicant with my intended major to be biz econ and i got accepted, this doesn't mean you're accepted to Haas. Once i actually get to the school in the following fall. I have to apply to Haas with my intended major and once im in then its official.

Correct me if im wrong but thats how i believe it works.

but I thought Econ is part of Letters and Science, not Haas...

and dont we kind of "start over" on our GPA once we get to CAL...? do they look at our CC GPA still when we apply for the major?

They will look at your pre-req GPA, I'm pretty sure, and make sure you have all the requirements to get into the major. You declare your major during your first semester at the school, not before you get there.l

yeah I talked to the Econ Advisor for Econ and what she said is that you have to declare economics in the first four weeks you are at cal. You have to sign up for 2 classes (stats with prereq calc, and either macro or micro economic theory) in order to get into the major they will look at your pre reqs and your courses during your first semester. If both parts accumulate to GPA over 3.0 then you are in. But in the courses you are taking at CAL you have to have at least 2.7 GPA(Stats and theory). hope that helps....its kinda complicated but the major is impacted and therefore highly competitive. So far Ive heard that 300 try to make it every year and only 200 do....so yea...does anybody know how that works at UCLA?

thx for the information!

oh that's new information! thx!! i thought that cal's econ is not that hard to get in! that's like just ucla's biz-econ! so, what will happen if a student can't get into econ? kick out?

either kick out or you have to pick a different major. Most People switch to like Poltical Economy of INdus societies(PEIS) or Poli Sci....the problem is that you only have one shot....if you dont make it your first semester...you are basically done....really high pressure if you think about it...we have to make the transition and do really good....im kinda nervous....anybody else concerned?after two years of pretty hard work at the CC we all reached Cal and then have to study sth just because we just did not quite make it...damn that sucks...

they don't let you apply again?

Also, its not too hard to get into the major...

I dont think so....at least thats what my advisor told me....i heard its pretty hard...obviously none of us really ever had a real econ course...i mean i doubt that the intro macro and micro courses at the CC are even comparable to the Theory courses at CAL....and i dont think Calc Based Stats is gonna be that easy... but if you say its that easy that would be terrific news and please explain why do u think its easy?

I never said it was going to be easy.... I don't know where you read that.

I was just referring to the GPA requirements to get in are not too bad. 3.0 total and 2.7 for stat/econ theory .... that's not too hard

My friend who is EECS major at Cal took all the econ theory classes and got As in all of them he said the curve for econ classes are a lot better than engineering and its pretty easy to get a B, just getting an A will be challenging.

Just chill out man

"they don't let you apply again?

Also, its not too hard to get into the major...."

I suppose, thats were I read it. ("Not too hard= relatively easy in my mind")Must be mistake on my part.hahahah...

I hope people like you will be in my class. Then it really will be easy indeed.lol^^

3.0 in NO WAY guarantees admission to the econ major

Straight from CAL site:
"Students may apply to the major when all prerequisites are completed or they are enrolled in their final prerequisites. Because of large enrollments and limited resources, it is necessary to restrict the number of students accepted into the major. Many factors are considered in determining admission. The main criterion is academic performance as measured by GPA in the prerequisite courses. The average GPA in prerequisite courses for students admitted to the major in recent years has been a 3.4. The economics major is impacted and to be considered for admission students should have a minimum of a 3.0 in the prerequisite courses. Students with a GPA of less than a 3.0 are typically not admitted."

the classes they use to calculate prereq gpa are:
calc1
calc2
lower div micro and macro
upper div micro or macro econ
stats course

if you havent completed all of those, but are currently enrolled, then they just use the classes you have completed to calculate prereq gpa.

66% average acceptance rate. it's not THAT bad. still sucks.

the only thing i'm not sure about is if a 5 in bc calc ap exam counts for A's

At Prospective Majors

it says that
"Admission decisions will not be made until any prerequisite courses in progress are finished and grades are available."

Doesn't that mean they wait until semester is over to calculate GPA?

yeah. i think so...that means you apply and don't find out for like 3 months. lol.

oh well, not as bad as the wait to find out if you actually get into berk. haha.

I've been admitted as a PEIS major. If I applied to Econ, would I have a chance? I have 4.0, but I took Calc 16AB, and since I'm a transfer I still have to take Econ 100AB and Stat 20.
I'll be completing PEIS pre-reqs this summer.

Should I declare PEIS first then apply to Econ?? Is it possible to change after declaring one?

If you are nervous, go to webcast.berkeley.edu. They have 100A and 100B lectures online. Get the textbook and watch the video and learn the material ahead of time.

So If i already know that i don't have a 3.4 in my prereq should i just not bother applying to that major??? becuase they wouldn't accept me??? or the 3.4 GPA doesn't really apply to transfers and i can just get atleast a 3.0 and still have a change??? orrrr i should just apply to one of the easier Econ majors like PEIS??

I didn't know PEIS was an 'easier' Econ major.

i think so? i mean easier to get in cause once you get into UCB there are no GPA restrictions in getting into that major whereas Econ is impacted and requires a higher GPA to get in
