Capstone Scholars Day - Jan 16, 2010 - Info :)

This extra parent is just crashing the Capstone event. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been kicked out of an event…LOL…Of course if I see that there isn’t enough space, I do have enough class to find something else to occupy my time…

^^^

My gut feel is that not only will Alabama not know that there is an extra parent there (unless the parents are vocal about it), but even if Alabama becomes aware of it, their southern hospitality will “kick in” and they won’t dare ask anyone to leave. :)

At Bama Bound, Alabama had no idea of who had one or two parents there. They had no idea of which parent(s) when with what kid.

Like Bama Bound, parents at CSD will just have nametags saying guest of such and such prospective student, their name was not on the sticker. I highly doubt UA would ask the extra parent to leave.

2Leashes, travel isn’t cheap. If I was in the position of attending CSD this year, it would be over a grand for two people (on the cheap). CSD is great because the student gets to see UA and other top students (s)he will be attending school with. It would be really selfless, but you could see it as a birthday present.

2leashes…

Your Bday is the day after my mom’s. She’ll be 81! (Dad is turning 90 in 2010!) So, you’re just a youngin’ :)

A birthday present for myself? Just what I always wanted–a college visit. Actually, if my daughter hadn’t already talked me into flying out to see Indiana University in Bloomington, I might consider it. This is the disadvantage of OOS. Just not feasible to attend all the college events. :frowning: I don’t like that! I want to be able to go to Parents’s Weekend and whatever else the school does for families. Not to mention going to some of the home games. Just not gonna happen at Bama or IU.

If it makes you feel any better, we are from the NW and can’t attend either. We sure would like to make the trip though!

2 leashes, not sure when you plan to visit IU (btw it is beautiful) but if you plan to see both rather than looking at 2 separate visits, go to something like travelocity or kayak.com and plug it is as MULT-CITY trip ie california to bloomington to birmingham to california.( and it can be over a period of days) i was really surprised when planning my sons trips that a multiicity really ends up being about the same price as one round trip ticket. you can pm me if you are unsure what i’m talking about to put it in.

example although dont hold me to exact prices this is roughly what i remember

to dallas return was 300.00
to bloomington return was 325.00 therefore 2 trips was going to be 625.00
doing the multi city ticket over 3 days and seeing both places was 349.00 return total

Thanks for the multicity tip! We have multiple colleges to visit and a week off for Mardi Gras. We’re going to try to get at least two in that week. Going to use your suggestion for flights!

you’re welcome montegut, you just plug in starting point and date and add each place with the date and time of day you want to fly out , and final day back to your starting point.
i personally like kayak as it checks all flights/airlines at once gives an overview and then could tweak it for best fares or airline convenience

So true…it’s amazing that “circle trips” (more than one destination) can be so cheap. My H once flew from LAX to O’Hare (to see his parents), then flew to Orlando to meet us at WDW, and then returned to LAX…and the airline only charged $20 extra for including the O’Hare destination. LOL

And, if you’re using frequent flyers, they often don’t charge anything extra…it just counts as one trip.

Thanks for the tips! But I noticed you use Kayak. I fly Southwest and they don’t use the discount sites since their rates are low as it is (most of the time.) Truth be known, I’m a fearful flyer, so I avoid defying the law of gravity every chance I get. Aside from short trips in the '60s from SJC to Orange County, CA, the times I’ve flown since then have been: ONCE each in '77, 79, '88, 2002 and 2005. That’s it. It was the turbulence in 1988 that caused my sudden fear. So, I’ve gotten to know a Southwest pilot via a “fear of flying” forum and I’ve just felt comfortable with SW, in general. They also don’t charge for luggage (unless you go over your weight and amount-limit.)

Anyway, I’ll have to see if they do the multi-trip flights. Thanks again!

I’m a southwest girl myself. Liking the option of the train for Bama. But really, if you’re looking for southwest, fly into Birmingham and rent a car and drive the 45 minutes. The Birmingham airport is small and user friendly. You’ll get your rapid reward credit both on your flight and rental car. Just got something from Hertz that if you rent for two or more days, you’ll get quadruple credit. So with a two day round trip to Bama via Birmingham southwest, you can earn four flight credits. I’ve been saving a newly earned flight credit for a faraway college visit, and looking to earn some vacation flights during these college visits.

anyone know if there is a shuttle from birmingham or would we need to rent car looking to come in late fri and leave sat or early sun

There are airport shuttles, but I would think that for 2 or more people, it might cost about the same to rent a small car and then have the convenience of a car.

What do you all think? Don’t you think that a shuttle would cost about $30-50 per person? So, renting a small car for a couple of days could be about the same.

I called the shuttle company last week and the fare for one person, one way is $80, so a car is cheaper and so much more convenient. Most rental companies stay open until midnight, though I remember Enterprise closing at 11PM. It’s a weekend, so rates will be lower and you will have your choice of companies. Always check Southwest and the other airlines because there are times when there is a huge price difference. When I was thinking about coming home for Thanksgiving, the legacy carriers wanted $175 each way while southwest wanted $375 each way.
