What do most 4digs do for car insurance? stay on parent policy? Buy from rental company?

I'm pretty sure most stay on parents policy, but I guess it just depends on the person. Anyways, you won't be doing all that much driving as a 4 degree, just on the rare weekend when you can go out and some upperclassmen has a free car.

My parents took me off theirs I believe. Dropped their bills by half. :)

they really can just take you off. most driving will be home on breaks, which is not often at all

Here is what we did with our cadet RE: car insurance.

Per our agent, we no longer cover our cadet as a "rated driver" on the policy. In otherwords, we do not pay for that cadet as a driver anymore. However, as our cadet is still considered a "household member" and drives the car(s) when home with us, our cadet is still covered on our car insurance policy.

This "household member" clause also allows our cadet to rent a car in COS, or anywhere allowed, and still maintain coverage while driving that rental, just like we do. But, there is also the option, and it is a good idea, to consider the extra insurance offered when renting a car.

We chose to change our coverage as above because we know we have a responsible cadet. Otherwise........to think of the possibilities! lol

When our cadet is allowed to have a car at the Academy, then other insurance options will be considered at that time. Hope this is helpful.

And, do you incoming appointees know you can rent a car at the age of 18 in COS because you are at the Academy/military?

For those families that have USAA car insurance, they have a special coverage for dependents who are attending any of the service academies. Basically, if you inform them that your son or daughter is attending the academy (at least the 1st 3 years that they don't have a car), they will stay on your policy and be allowed to use your car at home while on leave, but you will not be charged extra for this minimal coverage. This saves you a fortune, but gives you the peace of mind to know that they are covered during those short breaks. BTW, they insist that you keep them on the policy, otherwise, in the event an accident, you are both covered, especially for a potential major liability. I m not an agent for them, but have used them for 30 years and do recommend that the cadets consider using them when they graduate from the academy.

Wow. That's some good info and advice. Thanks.

And we can rent cars at the age of 18 in COS? That's pretty cool. Not that I'll need a car for a while anyway, though...

Yup. I rented a car from Advantage and 4 of us from my squad drove up to Keystone for a weekend of skiing. Hotel + car for the 4 of us amounted to about 90 per person - not bad for a nice weekend of skiing in civvies. :)
