Cardplaying?

Just curious about how serious (and perhaps widespread) cards are in college, as I'm an avid cardplayer.

poker? yes

other card games? ie Spades, Hearts, Bridge? you might have to find the card club

Poker is very widespread. In fact, I'm playing tomorrow.

Nope only once in a while for fun.

Cards just aren't the thing down in the southwest. You'll find a lot playing pool, though.

I'm sure you can find people to play spoons or whatever, but poker is the main thing. I know a lot of people who are willing to play some Texas hold'em at parties.

Poker is the universal card game, and in many circles, Big Two, Spades, and Hearts are played with great relish.

I too am an avid cardplayer. From what I've heard, poker games are prevelant throughout college campus, with a lot of games being played for fun amongst friends, with more serious games and limits spread as well

I was pretty much referring to Hold 'Em/Stud/Omaha type deal. I do play hearts as well. Perhaps I'll be seeing some of you at the table next year...

hold em, anywhere.
omaha is huge in the south.
stud, probably not as much on college campuses, due to slower gameplay and less betting.

kings = fun :)

(for those who dont know... kings is a drinking game, that uses cards...)

kings is the ****!

At UW-Madison there is a real solid mixed game Holdem, Omaha h/l 8, omaha, 7 stud, and 7 stud h/l. Its a 5-10 game and its deadly serious. If you were wondering, its where Phil Helmuth starting playing poker, and the game is still played.

Considering that Hellmuth is a fish in side-games and anything besides holdem, that's not saying much, ha ha.

Anyways, the existence of decent stakes mixed game is really cool, alanstats; I've played poker at six different colleges, including my own, and have yet to see anything besides Hold'em, let alone a game featuring razz, among other delicacies.

That's a strong selling-point in favor of UW-Madison.

MIT used to (it still might) have card-playing clubs. There were two books written about them. Check 'em out

"Bringing Down the House" Ben Mezrich
"Busting Vegas" Ben Mezrich

^ those were about MIT's blackjack team...I hope that no college student would waste their time playing such a boring game.

Yea, its definitely hard to find a solid mixed game at mid limits. I play in a pretty regular game of 1-2 or 2-4 that includes razz among 4 or 5
other games.

in your experience, are college games micro, low limit, high limit, mid limit, or spread?

I have a .50-1 game among my friends (senior in high school) that I'm comfortable with...nobody loses too much. But even 3-6, might be too much for me.

There are very few high limit games, if only because most students are either unwilling, or can't afford to play them.

College players that wish to play high limit do so primarily on the Internet.

ksanders: i am reading "bringing down the house"...one of my favorite books.
