Career Advice ( Junior in college ). Harsh truths Welcome.

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking a little advice as far as choosing a career goes. That advice probably requires some background info.

Currently, I am in the summer between my junior and senior years in college. I have not really accumulated enough credits in any specific academic track to graduate in four years, so I plan on a fifth year of school. More specifically, I have spent 2 semesters taking business classes, 3 in engineering, and 1 in biology.

This previous semester I was studying Biology with the end goal of doing medical school. However, I am not heavily familiar with the medical profession.

To familiarize myself, I will be shadowing doctors in various specialties this summer.
I know that doctors are compensated well and are in high demand at least. This field seems interesting to me, but there are definitely things that I feel ( not think ) are much more interesting.

One such thing one would be the area of law and politics. Why I have been interested in this field is unbeknownst to me. Several times, I have considered going to law school with the goal of working as a prosecutor or some other similar governmental role.

Basically, I just would like some advice on pursuing either of these paths or something different.

You’re thoughts will be greatly appreciated

I’ve got no knowledge of medicine, but I have a cursory knowledge of law and the legal industry. Since you don’t really know what you want to do, I would suggest that it would be a mistake to apply to either law school or medical school straight out of college. If you are leaning toward law school, consider working for a year or two in the industry to see whether it is for you. You could do work as a legal assistant or as a paralegal in a law firm, and if the work interests you, then maybe you would dive into law school. Of my friends who went into law, roughly half worked for a year or two before matriculating. A handful went to work for a law firm before deciding against law school (one now works for Google, another in consulting!).
