Career in school counseling

I am going to be entering college next fall and plan on majoring in psych. One of my possible career choices is being a high school counselor. The confusion of entering college is so emense and i feel that students should be properly warned esp if they are the first to go to college in their family...

anyways i want to know if majoring in psych would be the best way to go and also what kind of graduate degree i would need to aquire. Thanks everyone!

The majority of high school counselors that I know have obtained degrees in the field of Education. Specifically, this would include first getting a B.S. in Education followed by a Master's degree in Education in fields such as Counsellng Education, Psychological Services in Education, Counseling Psychology in Education, etc. Students who major in Psychology (Arts and Sciences) at the Bachelor's level frequently continue their studies for the Master's and/or Doctorate degree in a field such as Clinical Psychology (which can then lead to a position as a Clinical and or School Psychologist) or go into other areas of Psychology which might entail research in a laboratory, etc. These are just a few of the many possibilities that can be explored.

FYI, School counseling and school psychology are two different things. School counselors are guidance counselors they give student academic and career counseling they also counsel students with personal problems.

School psychologist do individual and group counseling with kids with mental and behavioral problems. They also do ALOT of testing.

Look up jobs in your state. I live in CA and most school psychologist are needed to work with kids in special education.
