School Counseling

I am interested in becoming a school counselor. I know you can’t get a bachelors in counseling, so does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should pursue as my first degree? I was thinking pyschology or sociology, or even an education degree

Those all seem sensible to me. Why not drop by your GC’s office and ask about his/her career path? You don’t have to decide right now. You can go to your college career center too, because they will be able to advise you.

Generally, those who want to work as a guidance counselor or school psychologist work towards an undergrad degree in sociology, psychology, or education…or better yet, double major in education and either psych or sociology. If you prefer a certain age group (say middle school), you can fine tune the psych degree to an adolescent psych degree for example; elementary age, you might study early education courses relative to the psych or younger children. Don’t worry about any of that yet though, your first year will be all pre-reqs, your second year will be mandated courses as well, you can fine tune in your junior and senior years. It is good to consider schools where you think you might want to work as the clinical part of your degree will take place in that state and that is where you will be most easily licensed. Some states have reciprocal agreements, another thing to check out.
