do you think that counselors will be in a higher demand for the future? i am considering this as a possible career choice. my counselor was my math teacher sophmore year and she really didnt help me a whole lot with the application process, in fact i thought i could do her job. I found out all about my apps and colleges myself or through the wonderful people on CC.

i want to major in psychology and go on to get my masters however i am not sure what kind of degree high school counselors hold. child development?

any other specific majors for counseling?

ask your counselor, just call them up and ask. :)

Most counselors have a BA in psyc, some also have a BA in Child Dev. you can have a BS in Chemistry it doesnt matter the big thing is making sure you have the req. psychology courses to get into a masters program.

To become a high school counselor you need a masters of course but its different from the MFT(Marriage Family Therapy) Cert. You have to go through PPS( Pupil Personnel Services) which takes about 3 years. The third year is basically a paid internship so that you can get your 3000 hours to become certified.

This site offers a great amount of info:

If you are from CA you def want to try eureka.org

I highly reccommend doing career interviews. Call up a highschool and ask if you can set up an interview with one of their counselors, and if you're in college talk to one of the counselors. One of my teachers is finishing his last semester in the masters program to get his MFT and I asked him a million questions. So really ask questions! You may even end up getting a great internship.

thanks so much wanderlust...that helped a lot =)
