Career options for upcoming Sophomores?

Hi! I am an upcoming Sophomore and I am currently trying to decide what I want to major in, and sort of gathering a few colleges I'm interested in.
Alright so, I know I want to be a writer and journalism sparks my interest the most. can see myself as a novel writer or any other writer. The music journalism field is where I want to be. It suits me the most although the pay is pretty low for the freelance world, I'm sure i'll do freelance at some point but writing for a big magazine or media music publication would be great.
I have the idea of making my own music site with music reviews, concert reviews, etc so im wondering would this be a good idea to make in chances of impressing publications during high school and college?
And lastly, any tips on colleges that offer great journalism or communications programs?
Any input would be great! Thanks!

Darn it, I had a whole long post typed out and then accidentally exited…

I’ll give a brief summary of what I said before…basically, just focus on journalism of any type right now, don’t focus too much on music journalism, as there aren’t really any J-schools that offer a concentration in music, I think Mizzou offers a arts/culture concentration though…anyhow, just try to go for any opportunities that arise. Does your school have a newspaper? If so, be sure to be on the staff. +20 if you can become editor. If they don’t have a newspaper, at least do Yearbook, that can be beneficial.

Look for any opportunities to be an intern at a local paper…maybe the journalism teacher at your school could hook you up with one. Apply to summer journalism camps, there are some good ones out there (Medill’s Cherubs and AAJA’s J-Camp [and no, you don’t have to be Asian to apply] to name a couple). Apply to anything.

In no certain order…

The top J-schools in America are (in my opinion):

[ul][]NYU
[]Boston U
[]Syracuse
[]Northwestern
[]U of Oregon
[]U of Texas
[]U of Florida
[]USC
[]UNC
[]U of Maryland
[]Ohio University
[]Ball State University
[li]U of Missouri[/ul]
[/li]

…Probably leaving out a few, but those are the top ones.
