Career Services at your College

Although I love my collage(UW-Madison), Career services for internationals is just horrible! I am a junior undergrad engineering major, and I can't find an internship!
There are like 60-70 companies for citizen buts only around 6 for international, and they are pretty decent companies like BP, P&G, so it is very tough!

I was wondering how is it at your school and any you know of?..

It’s not the fault of Career Services - most companies are reluctant or unable to hire international students for a variety of reasons. A position might require a security clearance because the company does federal contracting, or the company might use their internship programs as a recruiting tool and that’s why only hire students who are eligible to stay and work in the States after college.

By the way, when you applied for a student visa you agreed to leave the country when done with your education. Don’t be surprised if you have to follow through.

barlum,

I am already aware of the information you provided. I am sorry if my intent was seen as if trying to blame directly an authority.

I already had talk with the career services, and I was quite disappointed, and I dont believe that it is all they can do. As an example, my friend recently graduated from gw with a quite bad gpa around 2.7 in international business, she immediately found a job. We are already a handful of Int Engrs at school, I believe little bit effort can get us all have our intern experience, and considering the tuition we pay ( which is around 3 -5 times more than instate), I would expect some effort. That was my point, and I was wondering if you there are any people having similar situation.

But then I saw your egocentric message (I hope it satisfied you well), which does not seem to help much but still thanks! so I could clarify my question.

I understand your frustration about Career Services’ lack of assistance for international students. You are paying a lot of money and they don’t seem to be doing all they can to find you a job or an internship.

If it is any consolidation, I am not aware of a single college that invests a lot of energy into helping their international students find jobs. It would consume too many resources to help a very small segment of the student body. (Another example: my college’s career center does not bring tech companies to campus because we are a liberal arts college and only a handful of students are interested in technical careers. Those students need to find their own opportunities.)

My international friends who found internships and jobs in the US were all very proactive: they did a lot of networking, went to career fairs, talked to an immigration lawyer about their legal visa/employment options, etc. While it is a lot of work to do on your own, it is also an opportunity for you to grow personally and professionally!
