careers in comic books

Hey,

I've been going over stuff i'd want to do with my life, and i figure i might want to be a comic book writer somewhere down the line. That said, how hard is it to go into comic books with a degree from dartmouth?

wait a second... i know you from facebook i think! wow that's lame.
in terms of your question, i would guess you could ask the art department considering you'd probably have to get a lot of training in the studio art field.

I don't know too much detail about this, but last year a '06 did a comic book (well, a graphic novel but I think it's pretty similar) as his thesis. He blitzed out about it at the end of the year giving people the option of buying a copy. I bought one and it was actually pretty good. I don't know if he's planning on making a career out of it or anything but as you can see there are certainly options.

Comic books is a very competitive industry, so you’ll need a lot of drive and passion.

Here are some schools that offer courses in comic book related fields:

Savannah College of Art and Design (major in Sequential Art)
Minneapolis College of Art and Design (major in Comic Art)
University of Oregon (minor in Comic and Cartoon Studies)

There is also a two-year school in Vermont called The Center For Cartoon Studies, but be aware, it gives out certificates, not degrees.

Otherwise, look into majoring in Illustration or related fields like Graphic Design and Visual Communications. Taking Creative Writing classes would help, too.
