@ProudWADad : My best wishes both to you and your daughter on her Carleton wait list.
Our daughter never applied ED to any college during the 2016 admissions cycle, either. Like you, we wanted the flexibility of college choice based partly on financials and, consequently, she never enjoyed any of the advantages of an ED admission application. It has been my understanding that once admitted ED, all other applications were supposed to be withdrawn.
But commentary on CC also has it that an applicant can refuse an ED if it is not affordable. I think the key is “not affordable,” – not simply because it’s financially-advantageous to turn down an ED. Something sounds “Creaky” out there in Washington State! They likely have crossed the line, and Carleton should be notified and should be off the table for that family of @Creaky .
Our daughter is a junior at Carleton, which had really had been her first choice, but we did it via regular decision.
Looks like @Creaky’s D was admitted to Emory and will be an athlete. That Carleton app should have been pulled.
I understand it’s frustrating not to get the financial package from an ED2 but as a parent of an RD kid who was WL, it makes me sad. We also did not go ED because we need to see the financials and the “refusal based on finances” is very vague for ED.
At what point, do you get to tell the school it’s not affordable? Sure, we all want save costs but isn’t that the risk of ED? You don’t get to compare what might be a better deal somewhere else. Assuming it’s somewhat accurate to the NPC, can you reasonably refuse?
We all have increased an sensitivity about irregularities perpetrated in the college-admissions processes as a result of the recent college-admission scandals. @Creaky should have his daughter – on her own initiative-- promptly withdraw/refuse her admission to Carleton.
If not, I hope the daughter’s biographical information that Creaky posted on CC’s Emory discussion site (viewed here: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/21893903#Comment_21893903 ) allows Carleton’s admissions office to properly ID her, confirm with Emory that she was indeed offered ED2 admission there on Feb. 1, and then rescind her offer of admission to Carleton. The daughter clearly knows she did not withdraw other applications following receipt of her ED2 admission to Emory. What appears to CC posters as an act of dishonesty should not be rewarded, and a qualified student on the current wait list deserves that spot.
What my kid’s college counselor stressed (and some admissions reps echoed) is that when applying ED (1 or 2) assume that the College’s estimate on their Net Price Calculator is price you will pay. A college will never offer you less than that; they could offer more, but don’t expect it.
As for getting out of an ED commitment, we were told that if the college offered at least as much aid as was estimated in the NPC estimate, you couldn’t get out of the commitment. Excepts would be a death, job loss or other significant change to the family’s finances since the date the CSS/FAFSA data was submitted.
Most colleges probably will not do anything to a student who backs out of an ED deal, but it reflects very poorly on them, their family and their high school counselor (who must sign something saying the family was advised of the binding nature of applying ED). But some colleges do share names of students who renege on ED offers (without hardship) with other institutions so anyone who does it is taking a risk of losing their seat.
My kid wanted to attend Carleton more than anything, but we could not risk ED 1 or 2 due to finances. We knew this made it less likely for him to get in, but we needed to be able to compare offers. Fortunately he was accepted RD.
I was waitlisted and Carleton is my first choice. It’s super upsetting to someone like me that @Creaky didn’t withdraw their application after being admitted ED2 to another school. It’s dishonest and takes away spots for qualified students who really want to attend.
@ultimate7 I’m sorry to hear that you were waitlisted at Carleton, your first choice college. If you choose to remain on the waitlist, I wish you the best of luck.
“but we could not risk ED 1 or 2 due to finances”
What was the risk? If they offered less than expected you say thanks but no thanks and apply elsewhere.
@ultimate7 Our daughter was accepted to Carleton but she will not be attending the school. I hope you make it off the waitlist.
hey y’all, i’m a current student at carleton and first of all i just wanted to congratulate everyone who got in (and super big fingers crossed for those on the waitlist!). carleton was pretty low on my list of schools when i was applying bc i was pretty sure i didn’t want to have to survive the winters up here, but when i visited for admitted students day i was overwhelmed with how much i loved the school, so i would strongly encourage anyone who has the means to take your prospie visit! it completely changed my perspective on the school, and it made my decision really easy. i’m sure you all know this already, but going to ASD is huge in terms of making your final decision, so i would really encourage everyone to visit if possible. hopefully i’ll get to meet some of you then!
My daughter is waitlisted, not sure if she will be accepted
Congratulations @MCM2023! Our son was also admitted RD and he is thrilled. We are attending admitted student days on April 19th. Hope to see you there.
If anyone is planning to visit Carleton later this week, there is currently a Winter Storm Watch for the area. There is the potential for 7-15 inches of snowfall, a wintry mix at times, and blowing snow Wednesday evening through early Friday afternoon. Please monitor conditions, as this forecast may change.
Hey @CollegeGrad79, thanks again for your posts on my Distribution Requirements thread. We are (were?) planning to attend the visiting days later this week - do you have any insight as to what they will do for students/families who are unable to get there if this storm is as bad as they’re expecting?
@AMW1963 No I don’t, but I’m sure you can contact admissions, they are very friendly and easy to deal with. It always seems to snow for one of the accepted students days in April.
Here is some possibly useful information for your son’s/your trip.
If you are flying in, if I remember, Carleton provides a shuttle from the airport to campus for admitted student day. Northfield lines shuttles are used to driving in the snow.
If you plan to go with your son and when you get into MSP airport and you feel that roads are too slick to drive to Northfield, there are lots of hotels relatively close to the airport. Mall of America has quite a few reasonably priced hotels. It is about 4 miles from the airport. There is a light rail that goes from MSP airport to Mall of America and most, if not all of the hotels have airport shuttles.
Waitlisted kid. Waitlisted at 5 places actually. Weird year. Not sure he’ll accept spot on waitlist given other acceptances. Good luck to you all.
@AMW1963 I am sure that the weekend is still on. I remember when ds was looking at Carleton we were told the motto, “Hell freezes over. Classes delayed 20 minutes.”
I once heard an admissions person say that more kids who come during a bad-weather ASD weekend end up committing to Carleton. The weather doesn’t scare them off and, in fact, probably gives them more opportunities to meet current students and really see the amazing kinds of kids on campus. I know that for my ds (we visited the last week of April, not during ASD) he seemed most impressed by the camaraderie on the floor of his host student and how when the host had to go to some kind of musical practice he was left in the good hands of all the floormates, who were equally as warm and welcoming as the original host. They played games and cooked in the lounge and talked.
I hope y’all decide to go!
@AMW1963 Did you go, and how was it?
@youdon’tsay We had to postpone until next week - couldn’t get a flight out of NYC.
I hope you and your student are having fun!
