I was wondering how likley it is to get a full ride/ a lot of money to go to Carleton and what their policies are on merit-based aid, considering i probably won't get much need-based. I was just wondering if it is at all possible, especially if i am over-quailified, do they have money to "throw at me"?

1) nobody is overqualified for carleton. you may be very qualified, but they can reject anyone.

2) no merit scholarships except national merit

You're SOL if you're looking for large merit scholarships. If you're not going to get much need-based aid, then the best you can hope for from Carleton is a $1000/yr National Merit Scholarship (the $2000/yr NM scholarships are given to those with more financial need than the $1000/yr NM scholarships, I'm not sure where they draw the line).

hm i got a $2000 one without applying for financial aid.

Really? I used to think all NM scholarship kids got $2000/yr too at Carleton, but I know of a few people who have $1000 NM scholarships inseatd and aren't on a large amount of financial aid. On the FAQs for new students page it says "Carleton recognizes the achievements of National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholars with annual awards of up to $2,000. Other than these awards, Carleton's financial aid is completely need-based." (Put emphasis on the "up to" part to see my point.) In other places it just states that everyone receives $2000/yr who is National Merit, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't completely accurate.

Either way, if you're expecting Carleton to throw tons of money at you based on your grades and test scores and extracurriculars, it's just not going to happen.

Just wonder if Carleton gives any thing for NM Commended students?

Only for National Merit Scholars.

If you make it to finalist, you get one. Otherwise, no.

Carleton has a number of scholarships that you can get, but I don't know how many of them are for significant money. Most of them are pretty small (a couple hundred or thousand a year) and if you do get one, they just deduct the amount from your financial aid.

Okay first, you can't be overqualified for Carleton. A lot of kids this year thought they were too and they ended up getting waitlisted at Carleton and a lot of other schools.

Secondly, Carleton is all need-based. If you are National Achievment, National Merit finalist/semifinalist, or National Hispanic you will get 2000 dollars every year. Later, if you go to Carleton, there are opportunities for small scholarships in your major. I know for sure there are some music ones, etc.

Does Carleton give big financial aid package for transfers?
