Carleton College Class of 2012

I just got my acceptance packet! It's the best one so far, I'm so surprised and happy ^_^ Best of luck to those who are still waiting.

hey.chaglisma.was ur accpetance package sent by fedex/what kind of fedex?

How do I know? It says US Postage in the corner.

Maize, well it never hurts to have a waitlist, especially for them. might cause some angst for some high schoolers, but definitely not for the college.

uhh they gave me really appealing fin aid. income bracket> 150000 and they gave me a 15000 grant/year.

ACCEPTED

I am a US citizen living in India and was damn sure i was rejected since i hadn't gotten my letter and i got it like 10 minutes ago!

If i can just convince mysef to stay somewhere so cold I am going to go!

Congratulations to a lot of (hopefully) future Carls!

For those who were waitlisted or denied, I wish you well. Carleton likes to "build a class" - find the right mix of elements that will keep Carleton unique. Being on the admissions committee is not a job I would want - way too difficult when there are so many excellent candidates.

ACCEPTED!!! I'm lovin this right now and i think that being "recruited" for tennis prob. helped me some. However, I am unfortunately naming myself the unofficial "waitlist king" this year, being waitlisted at UChicago, Northwestern, and WashU in St. Louis. Also accepted at UMich, and still waiting to hear from Bowdoin. What do you guys think I should do about the 3 waitlists? Of the three, Uchicago was my top choice, followed by N'Western and then Washu.

phoenix17, my son was waitlisted at five schools, including UofC and Northwestern. He was accepted at Carleton, UMich, Oberlin, and a couple of others (but not his top two choices). He's starting his third term at Carleton, and he loves it.

One thing to consider about the waitlist process: it prolongs what I can only call the agony of the admissions process. You'll need to choose one of the schools that you were admitted to and send in a deposit to it. Being on a waitlist at another school (and hoping for that school) can make it hard to get excited about or commit to your chosen school.

Another thing to consider, do you need financial aid? If so, this complicates getting off the wait list, because many perhaps most colleges' financial aid well has run dry by the time they go to their wait lists.

There are some other threads about wait lists in this forum, as well as on the College Admissions forum. Not only do you need to give waitlisting careful thought but don't short change the decision-making process in picking from your acceptances. The likelihood is that you'll be attending that school. Good luck!

ACCEPTED! The financial aid package didn't quite cut it so I don't know if I'll be attending. Still, it feels great to be accepted at Carleton.

corbin450 (or anyone else): if you don't mind, could you post some more about financial aid issues? (I probably shouldn't be posting on your thread because I am a junior and won't apply until next year, but Carleton is at the top of my list now and I will definitely need financial aid to attend.)

oh, and congrats!

Just got Fedexed today! (I'm from Beijing)
Accepted!

It was a big surprise because my scores weren't good.
And the financial aid package was very generous!

I was so excited that I ate 7 Baozi for lunch!

KatieApplies, my problem with the financial aid is not so much Carleton in general, it more has to do with me being middle class. Carleton's aid package to me was decent - vastly larger than UChicago's and quite a bit bigger then Grinnell's (I was surprised about Grinnell, because after all they're loaded) - but it's still out of my family's range. If you're from a lower socioeconomic background you don't have to worry, because Carleton will do a good job making sure you can afford it. If you're middle class, there's still a chance that you'll get great fin aid, but my advice (when money is a concern) would be to apply to quite a few schools so you can compare offers. It's also a good idea to apply to one's that have a history of strong fin aid (princetonreview has one list).

Do not assume that Carleton's FA is going to be all that great if you have a low EFC. Our contribution with the Carleton package is at least 3X our EFC (almost half our annual income!) and that's not including modest loans for our S too.

Not likely that he'll be a Carl.

It may be worth contacting the Financial Aid office to see if the offer can be revised. I have had good experiences working with them.

I agree with fireflyscout. We also had a good experience with Carleton's FA office. They revised their offer, as did my older daughter's college the year before. Just enough to make them affordable for us--with some struggle and angst!

GOT IN!!! and so did my friend!
regarding FA, it was good from Carleton, but about 2X the EFC at Bowdoin.
I have heard that sometimes colleges will accept you and then not give you much moneyso that you are more likely to decline. Maybe if you called or met with the FA Office they would be able to lower it.
