Carleton Writing Supplement CommonApp

I’m a bit stuck on the words that come to mind part of the application:
Now, for a bit of fun…
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see the word (word association - just a few words):
Knowledge?
Play?
Future?
They say for fun, so does that mean they won’t be scrutinizing every word you put in the answers?
What have other applicants (past or present) put for this section?

Also, for this question are they looking for a particularly creative, abstract response even though its only 150 words? Carleton is powered by wind turbines. What empowers you?
Of course I could say “ambition” and “a desire to constantly challenge myself” but that is cliche, I’m sure. Would it be alright if I said those things but with a creative twist? Or should I try to think of more unique empowerment sources?

My daughter put “coffee empowers her” with some humor and lots of her character in it. I would say it was a very causal and personal writing. I liked it a lot and obviously Carleton did too. Be yourself, I think Carleton likes to see that in the applicants and I believe they know if you belong or not. After all, you want to go to a school that you belong and are happy there and that is one of the ways for them to identify a future Carl. BTW, my daughter is super happy there. Good luck!

Thanks so much @kchendds that was very helpful!

You are welcome!

My son also wrote a playful, fun essay. I think he sat down and wrote it in one draft.

@Lizardly What do you mean by “playful”? Humorous? Not using serious examples?

These questions are best asked to Carleton directly.

Not trying so hard to sound smart. Just being himself. It was a chance to use humor.
