Carnegie Mellon 2016 EDers

Wait… it’s 33% ED for SCS??? That’s much better than I envisioned. I had been under the impression that SCS ED is even lower than RD. How much of those 300 do they usually accept ED?

Gah I should have done that pre-college thing. It seems to help immensely. Oh well.

Sorry, I was referring to the overall 33% acceptance rate to all schools in CMU, my bad :<

damn, i got excited for a second haha ;-;

There’s a rumor it’s only 25 people for ED1. I refuse to believe that though haha.

d’awww I’m sorry loopy, hugs? :<

And programmer, I’m pretty sure it’s 24.

How many usually apply ED to SCS?

I feel like I didn’t do enough programming before. Just started, really. That might be a ding when compared to all of you with the oodles of experience haha.

@gerian

Actually when I visited, many of the professors and admissions officers stressed that you don’t need to have experience with programming before college. In fact, i believe 1/3rd of the freshman class has little or no experience with programming. I think they are just looking for people who are very interested in computer science and people who are very smart overall. Of course it doesn’t hurt to be a pro programmer though.

And I am also curious as to how many people apply ED to SCS, I feel like there aren’t that many ED applicants but who knows?

One of the counselors at Pre-College didn’t have any programming experience when he got into SCS. So it’s definitely possible to get in without a lot of experience.

I’m doing MCS for BSC.

They also can’t accept as many ED applicants as they would like because they don’t have the money to give full fin-aid to all those students.

The speculation here is outrageous.
With all due respect - it’s the blind leading the blind.

Regarding financial aid-- CMU is very honest and transparent they don’t meet full need for ED or RD. You could get an ED package that includes the maximum student and parent loans-- that’s not financial aid in my book! ED packages typically have work study and loans. This is nothing out of CMU’s coffers.

Unlike Ivies who literally fill half their freshman seats ED (and half of those are legacies at HYPSM), CMU SCS goes out of its way to not use up more than 20-25 seats. They only have spots for 135/140 - and they don’t know who is in the RD pile- they can afford the luxury of reviewing all the files. They have about 700/800 to read. That’s manageable. Adcoms don’t handle these- SCS faculty have the fiinal say on admissions.

PreCollege will eat some of those spots- probably 10 to 15 of the overall class will be precollege students in SCS. That’s the way it has been the past few years (see CC and FB pages to confirm) They hold all the qualification and they already proved themselves in 2-3 CMU courses.

@programmerguy Would that mean ppl who aren’t applying for financial aid have a better chance? If so, wouldn’t that break the whole need blind admission that cmu has?

Alex
They are need blind admissions.

But once they admit you - they are not need blind on what aid you get.
It’s clearly stated on their webpage and in their presentations.
They put their money where they want.

I still think it’s a bit of stretch to say it’s totally need blind admissions. Since internationals get zero aid- -they can admit qualified wait listed internationals on a rolling basis all the way through May as deposits and “no thanks” slips arrive. 23 to 27% o the freshman class the past 5 years are internationals.
That’s how the financial aid is paid for! Duh-- it’s called discounting.
the full paying students (both US and international) pay for the financial aid everyone else gets.
That’s the US financial system at ALL colleges.

Colleges like CMU who lack a sizeable endowment like Harvard and Princeton cannot afford to be need blind-- they don’t have the money to come up with the funds.

So remember this all once you graduate and give back generously ! (this is the basis of their current capital campaign directed towards parents and grads)

@mom2012and2014

"…probably 10 to 15 of the overall class will be precollege students in SCS." Do you mean from ED or for the RD group as well?

I’m just interested in learning more about the process. My younger brother is interested in CMU as well so if I don’t get in at least he’ll know that this pre-college program really is important to show interest.

Thanks for the clarifications!

Does anyone know the acceptance rate for CIT ED1 ?
How hard is it?
I applied for ECE

mom12and14 - they do meet full need for ED. I received an estimate which was exactly what it should have been - it had a grant, student loans and work study to meet up to our EFC. EFC is not suppossed to be included in the FA and it was not.

You have to be kidding me! I called the admissions office, and the lady said that online notifications will not be released until four days after today, and that they are only mailing out decisions today
What is going on??? I thought they were supposed to be released today

You guys have to check it out for yourself:
(412) 268-2082

we will be the last ones to get our decisions

So. Many. Conflicting. Answers…

OK I emailed the assistant director of admissions, and here’s her response:
We will post decisions online approximately 3-4 days after decision letters mail. For Early Decision I this means that around the 17th you should be able to see your decision on Where Am I in the Process.
