Also im a girl and I want to major in CS if you couldn’t tell~
I know CMU’s computer science program is amazing, but can I get in? I’m having a hard time deciding whether to ED here or to cornell computer science… what other schools would I be a match for or have a chance at? (UT austin, UMich, GTech, UIllinois-Urbana, etc?)
Your SAT is great, first of all. Your ECs are kind of all over the place, but it is really good that you have some ECs in the area you’re planning on majoring in. You’re nearly in the 75th percentile for CM, so I’d say that you have a pretty good shot at getting in. Definitely better than Cornell IMO. Same with all of the other schools you listed, besides maybe UT Austin. The only reason I say this is because UT Austin does not admit a lot of OOS students (I don’t know where you’re from, so I’m assuming you’re OOS), so you really have to stand out.
@falcon97 thanks! I’m worried about CMU because its number one in the country, but thanks for clearing it up with that vs cornell! I was super worried about urbana and UMich as well, do you think I have a better chance here than CMU?? Thanks again
All of the schools you’re looking at have more or less the same 75th percentile SAT. I think you’re a good candidate for all of them, I was just saying don’t consider UT Austin to be an automatic acceptance, because they are very selective with their OOS applicants. I’m an intern for a company called Plexuss, they’re essentially a college recruitment company. They have great info on every college in the US, I’d recommend you check out their website!
Your SAT and GPA is good and I think your ECs show your interest in Comp Sci so that is always a plus. I think if you love CMU enough it is worth a shot applying ED. Other matches might be USC, UMCP in addition to your list. I would consider UT Austin, UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, and maybe even some UCs as high reaches only since they tend to not accept as many OOS students but I’m sure you are still competitive and they are definitely worth a shot. You should throw in some more selective schools as low reaches.
75% of the admitted class scored 790 and above on the SAT math section and the average rank in class is top2%. With your unweighted gpa this doesn’t sound like you. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to what the other falcon said, your chances of being admitted are pretty low. Try to find schools that are more of a match. Best of luck!
