Carnegie Mellon Housing

Hi! I applied to CMU RD this year, and I was accepted to MCS for Biological Sciences.

I was just wondering: Can freshman get a single dorm? Do a lot of freshman request a single dorm? Also, what is the best dorm for freshman? From what I’ve been hearing, Stever and Mudge is the most popular place for freshman. But are there other dorms that are just as good? If so, why?

Thank you!

I lived in E-Tower ages ago, it’s your standard, traditional double dorm with communal bathrooms. From what I can tell, all the usual suspects for freshmen are traditional doubles (with some triples and quads thrown in). Some freshmen may luck out and get apartment-style rooms or suites if upper classmen don’t snag them all and if more students matriculate than they expect, but I think getting a single would be really tough.

The central part of Mudge is a converted mansion that has some unique rooms, but the two wings are modern additions with doubles similar to E-Tower. Stever is newer, but the rooms look to be very similar to E-Tower and Mudge. Although it’s really ugly on the outside, I remember the rooms in Donner being relatively nice and many had great views. Donner is also in a great location on campus…you don’t have to cross Forbes to get to the Student Union, Hunt Library, or the classrooms unlike Mudge, Stever, and Morewood.

Singles are very hard to find at CMU - extremely rare for freshman to get one. A few can get apartments. Usually freshman are in doubles with a few in triples of various size. I think quads are rare for freshman too. The campus isn’t huge, so even if you are across campus you aren’t really that far away.
