@AtWitsEnd Well, we applied around the same time and you haven’t heard back yet, so you’re still in the running I guess.
I hadn’t really thought of it like that actually. I just thought they reviewed every application individually in order then make a decision. I figured I was towards the back of that list bc I applied so late. But yeah, hopefully I still have a shot.
Does anyone know how many spots are left?
@MM2030 I don’t think anyone but the admissions office knows tbh, but if I had to guess, this late into admissions since it’s rolling, maybe 5-10 spots max. Hopefully I at least get waitlisted tho, especially since I missed out on chances to apply to other programs since my SAMS decision was late.
Has anyone gotten any acceptances or rejections recently? I’m still waiting to hear back from them. It has been over a month.
Today marks my 4th week anniversary of applying. I guess I’ll just have to call again if I don’t hear back by tonight.
@AtWitsEnd Dang… I know this must be so stressful! Definitely call again if you don’t hear back, but let us know your results when you do hear! We’re rooting for you
Although, I have heard that Carnegie Mellon is on break this week… not sure if this will affect the timing of some decisions
@reddress Thanks for the support! Yeah it’s been pretty stressful lol, like it’s so hard to think about anything else, but I’m still hoping for the best.
CMU SAMS will have decisions out later next week in another wave. They haven’t sent anything out because, as @reddress said, they are currently on Spring Break!
Does anyone know when they’ll start admitting students from the wait-list?
The bulk of final decisions for those on the wait-list happens mid May. If you’re lucky, sooner, but like I said- the majority of those decisions happen the middle of May. Hope that helps
I submitted all of my supplements for SAMS on 2/15 (mid-day), but still, haven’t heard back. How much longer should I give it? And is there even a chance at this point it sounds like the program is full and by now I’ll most likely be at the bottom of the waitlist…
I just got accepted today, so it seems like they are still taking people off the waitlist.
I just got my results this morning and I got in!! I am so excited!! Good luck to everyone on the waitlist, and to everyone who got rejected, I’m sure you will find something worthwhile to do in the summer. (Is there a group somewhere?)
Another user said that this program looks for potential + lack of opportunity, not achievements nor stats, and that is very true. I followed this thread since January, and I procrastinated hard on those essays because I thought I had to be excellent; that I had to be extremely good at something. Thing is, I never really had the opportunity in high school to explore as much I would have liked. I explained this, and also emphasized the diversity I would bring to the SAMS community (Peruvian, lived in Germany 3 years, military, an autoimmune disorder, etc.) I could explain more, but that should be enough. To anyone reading this in the future: just apply, even if you don’t think you’ll get in because you never know who they are looking for. And if you have to, apply late. I applied on March 1 and I got in.
Once again, good luck to everyone else out there!
Got rejected yesterday, not too surprised to be honest. Just more evidence as to what this program is: A chance for academically gifted people who have not had excessive access to opportunity to better themselves (for the most part, there have been exceptions). I clearly did not fit this profile, and this was exacerbated by my applying late in the first place. For those applying in the future, I’d like to emphasize to you the importance of applying early as it can help you greatly, and the office seemingly admits the bulk of the class before March. And if you have strong stats as I did, or are significantly privileged, I’m not saying it counts against you directly, but think of the profile the program is looking for, and definitely consider some backups. I really only regret arrogantly holding out for an acceptance and not applying to more programs when I had the chance. Good luck and have fun to all attending!
They definitely look for those kinds of people. Sorry about your rejection though. Have you considered anything else you want to do in the summer yet?
@MM2030 Congrats! I’m waiting to hear back after being placed on the waitlist. Do you mind sharing when you got waitlisted?
@Boyboywestcoast I have one more program to hear back from: MITES, and if that doesn’t work out, I’m gonna contact some professors to try to gain some lab research experience, and maybe even get a job at chic-fil-a. Congrats on getting in, you seem like a very interesting person!
I got into SAMS in very late February (i only finished applying 2/15). I’m not quite sure how I was admitted but here are my stats:
Black/African American
PSAT 1190 11th grade
Low income (below $60,000 a year, single mother household)
Qualify for reduced lunch
I attend a private Catholic school for low-income students where a corporate job pays 60%+ of tuition
And the essays I thought were only decent (I rushed) but I talked about my family’s living conditions, my lack of STEM opportunities at school, and my academic interests thoroughly. I was really shocked that I got in here because I didn’t get into TASP.
Sorry for those who didn’t get in.
