Carnegie Mellon vs Cornell University

I have been recently accepted to Carnegie Mellon University (Information Systems) and Cornell University (School of Hotel Administration), but I have not yet made my decision where to go. I have been interested in Hotel Management for awhile, but a lot of people had been advising me that Carnegie Mellon's Information System is a promising major....would people please share their opinion about this matter?

Thanks

Don’t pick a school for a major unless you’re 100% sure about it. Statistics show that college students change their majors about 3x. If finances aren’t a problem, it all comes down to where you think you’d thrive the most/be happiest. Personally, I’d go with Cornell. I’ve heard it’s a wonderful college experience + you get the Ivy sticker. And unless CMU gave you a competitive amount of merit aid, Cornell’s FA package should be very generous by comparison. Switching into the College of Arts and Sciences is fairly simple.

Wow those are really different directions. Hotel mgmt is so specific. IS at CMU should be a really solid major, but if you love hotel mgmt (do you have any exposure/experience?) and the hospitality industry then that’s a top school Although you study management and stuff, you really have to love customer service, I think.

If you’re very, very sure that what you want to do in the future involves computers, CMU. If not, Cornell is the much less risky choice.

CMU is like Moss from the IT Crowd. Remember that scene from Season 2 Episode 5 when Roy picks up a staple and says, “Moss, this is what you’re good at: science.”? And then he flairs his arms around indicating that the rest of the room represents what Moss isn’t good at.

That’d kind of what’s going on here: CMU has a clear advantage when it comes to most computer-related things. But Cornell wins out almost everywhere else.

Congratulations on both offers. graduating with from any of those schools will be a great look for you.
That being said, these are quite different fields. If all things being equal, including finances, and having the flexibility to change your major to something you really enjoy then Cornell will save you well.
However if, IS is what you are passionate about, then CMU is the right place to be.
In general, it would have benefited you to go to college with an open mind, knowing that your interest might change after your first or second semester. So, that is where Cornell would be idea if they would be that flexible with you.
Best of luck to you.

I would go cornell
