Carolina 101

So I RSVPd a few weeks ago saying I would attend with one parent, but something has come up for that date, and I can't figure out how to change it to say that I can't attend.

Is it even possible to do so?

maybe call the office, lol always the final option

Call them. One of my friends just didn't show up which probably reflected badly on him because they really do make an effort to pamper you when you go. The food sure was good haha
but besides that they have like a folder and everything with a bunch of stuff in it for you like coupons to the store, etc. So you should probably let them know out of courtesy. Or to save trees.

maybe I should go, then

it was that or a ropes course. It'd probably be more responsible to go to Carolina 101.

Bumping this up, for 2007.
Who's going? Who's worried that it's the weekend before the October SAT?
Who's studying SAT flash cards in the car/plane? Who's found a cheap(er) hotel? What's on the menu? Is there a football game that week?

What is Carolina 101?

Yeah... What IS Carolina 101??

It appears to be an open house/visit/information/tour day coming up this fall, with a hint of exclusivity in the invitation.
Was sent to students who've expressed interest in UNC, and I guess who've registered online with them and sent SAT scores. I don't know whether it goes out of state or not -- my D's in-state.
Cloying might know, if s/he's around the forum somewhere...

For those of you who received invitations: Have you already done an official tour and information session? Sent SAT scores? Listed UNC-CH as one of the two schools on your National Merit form? Started an application file? And are you in- or out-of-state?

Just a curious (and, okay, anxious) OOS parent here.

Yes, official tour. Yes, earlier SAT scores sent. Yes, in-state. No on National Merit -- didn't qualify.

Sorry to add to anxiety.

It's possible, looking at previous posts and location for schmivy, misstina3x and mallomarcookie that they were all N.C. residents, so maybe this is an in-state thing.

misstina isn't in-state.

Maybe those with exceptional SAT scores and an interest in UNC got an invitation?

We were told last year that they were based on PSAT scores.

My S didn't send PSAT scores anywhere last year. I have vowed to be a calm parent, and my advice to my S about UNC has been to focus on the application, do a great job, and the rest is like the lottery when you're OOS. So now I'm going to try not to worry about every little signal!

geezermom - to make you feel better...

For my d....No tour or special sessions, No early SAT scores, Remained Undecided on NM paperwork until the last minute, submitted application literally minutes before the regular deadline and 'Fedex'ed supplemental stuff (transcripts, recommendations, etc...) late, Never even HEARD of Carolina 101.

She rec'd a likely letter followed by acceptance and honors. Visited for the first time after being accepted.

My S has a very high PSAT score, and when NMSC offered to send it to 2 colleges for free, he listed UNC as one. But he hasn't heard anything about Caroilina 101. He did get an e-mail inviting him to an information session next weekend. (We're OOS) Fortunately, Idmom's last post seems to show the lack of this invitation is not a real loss. Anyone have a similar experience?

My D was national merit. My D did not get special invites like that from Carolina. I suspected bc it was already her first choice and she listed as one of the two. She did receive those invites from schools not listed. They had a large number of National Merit scholars attend this year as Freshmen as I under stand it.

For those of you that have attended Carolina 101, how is it different than just a normal campus visit to UNC? Was the experience extremely useful to you admission-wise?
Thank you for your help

how to get an invite? need a plan!

Carolina 101 was absolutely crucial in my decision to attend UNC. I had never been to Chapel Hill before that day, and, frankly, I had no interest in the school- I was dead-set on Virginia Tech (strong family connections) and had written Carolina off the list. I was totally unprepared for my reaction to Chapel Hill. It was very much like a homecoming. I don't even remember too many of the specifics of the day, but I do vividly remember my first view of Polk Place. The Wilson Library particularly impressed me- it was my vision of what "college" ought to look like. It was a warm day, and many people were relaxing in the grass- reading, throwing a frisbee, listening to music. Even lunch at Lenoir was delicious (eh... false "advertising" from Carolina Dining Services?). We had dinner at Spanky's before we left town. It sounds silly, but in the space of a day, I had made up my mind. I was a Tar Heel from then on.

If you're invited to Carolina 101, and you have any doubts about whether or not you want to go to Chapel Hill, do yourself a favor and go. If you already know you want to go to Chapel Hill, go anyway- see a friend (I did that the 2nd time I went up for a similar program; I went to a French class with a friend while my parents did the parents thing, which incidentally was helpful because it made me a lot less apprehensive about my language placement exam results).

As for how to get an invite, I have no idea- I feel like admission to UNC has gotten much more intensely competitive than it was even when I applied (for fall '03 admission). All I can say is, I wish you all luck- Carolina changed my life, and I hope it does the same for all of you.

Last year we were told that Carolina 101 was a recruiting event for NC students and based primarily on PSAT scores. Maybe it has changed. I'd call Admissions and ask.
