cars, anyone?

depends. i mean, he could pay his own share of the insurance. if i had an old POS that i'd use to go up for a weekend trip to vermont or something, or down to PA or DC, it's not a bad deal.

edit: but the reason the rest of you care is, it's occasionally convenient to have a car in the city. But usually logistically impossible, and a LOT less necessary than having one pretty much anywhere else in the USA.

haha , in all honesty parking your car in bayside probably wont do much for you tho I went to columbia just the other day. I timed it - it took me 50 minutes. But then again, im a nyc tansit master lol

HECK YES! I for one find cars extremely sexy. And the sexiest is STREET RACING! A (good) street racer automatically gets like +5000 I-want-to-date-you points. ;3

Way to make your first post, ^^.

A friend of mine drives in almost daily from Bay Ridge. He usually finds parking on Broadway within a few blocks of campus, but it also means getting to campus around 6 each morning and feeding a meter during the day. There is completely free parking in the area if you don't mind moving the car couple of times each week early in the morning for street cleaning. It can definitely be done, and I people in New York that do it, but I don't think it serves that practical of a purpose for a Columbia student.

edit: Did you grow up in Bayside? Man, unless you fork over the LIRR fares, that's a good distance from the city. You'll need a bus to get to the subway -- and then a transfer to the (1). To be perfectly honest, outside of rush hour, it's a long ****ing ways away without a car.

yeah, because real life is like The Fast and the Furious, and there are "street racers" hanging around new york city. Man, the NYPD may not care about jaywalkers, but they catch you cracking 60mph inside the five boroughs they're going to haul you in by the ear.

That's horrible. There are a ton of street racers here in Dallas + Dallas-area suburbia, and they just race on the streets where policemen aren't. xP I'm going to miss having them so close. (One of the only things I'll miss about Dallas... xO )

Does anyone know about the driving age in NYC (that is, can one drive with a junior operator's license from out of state, being under 18, etc.)?

you have to be 18 to drive in NYC, even a NYS junior operator's license isn't valid in NYC.

What if you're 17 and have an out of state license?

What if you're 18, but have a German drivers license, :D?

dont quote me on it but i think if you go get an international one then you can....could be wrong tho

Wait, I'll be 18 by the time I get there so I guess I'm good.

i'm almost positive you cant drive here without an american license...i think if u have an international license you need to at least take the silly written test and if you know how to drive already the road test shouldnt be a problem.

I have a license from Ohio, but it's expired by now. I never did my drivers license in Germany. I did it in Ohio and once I got back they just gave me a German one. Maybe they'll do the same in the US?

What about a motorcycle in NYC?
Are parking rates diff (as in NOT $500/mo)?

How feasible do you think it could be?

not to sound dull or anything but motorcycles are dangerous and stupid

Why would you need a motorcycle at college?

What with the proposed congestion pricing, none of you are going to want cars. or motorcycles.

What are the chances that they'll actually get it implemented? TBH, I don't think it's a bad idea.
