cars, anyone?

I have 2 very dumb questions to ask those of you who have already visited Columbia or go there. Now, don't laugh at me I am from Dallas, Texas and have never been to NYC and my knowledge runs as far as TV and the internet.

So,

1) Are freshmen allowed to have cars?

and

2)If we were allowed to have cars would that be an actual convenience or would it be a drag, I mean considering it IS NYC? Parking, traffic, etc. is it worth it?

(I couldn't find this info on the web but if you do have the link to it instead that would be cool also)

Thanks so much!

a car won't do you very much good

parking alone would bankrupt you in the first month or so. not to mention the annoyance of having to move your car every couple of days (cant park on certain streets on certain days or get a ticket)...also not to mention the threat of vandalism

bottom line: dont bring it.

This is New York City. We have really good public transportation. People don't have cars. I've never even had a driver's license.

A car would definitely bring more trouble than good. You really don't need one in NYC in the first place anyway.

to answer the first question....you are def allowed to bring a car....noone is stopping you....but the previous posters r right about the fact that it would be a huge financial burden and a terrible inconvenience....there is nowhere to park anywhere in manhattan so you can't exactly take it places and if you wanna go out and drink u clearly cant drive (i know its easy to get away with that in small towns but def not in ny!)

Thanks guys, that pretty much decided my poor car's fate. Destined to stay in Dallas, Texas; never to see the world, lol.

use it to drive your stuff to new york, and let your parent / wingman / copilot drive it back. it's about a 30-hour drive.

better idea: if you have a relative somewhere in the tri-state area, or a good family friend, make a deal with them: they can use the car, if you can leave it there and have it when you want it. everyone loves the city, but sometimes you just want to get away, or have to travel somewhere, and then the man with a car is king. very few people on campus have access to one.

www.zipcar.com ...thats another option...there is a columbia discount, no application fee and $25 a year membership fee (half price)

My friends who live and work in NYC don't have a car. I don't see why a student would need one.

I am going to Columbia and I live in Queens. If you realy want to bring your car, you can park it in my driveway for 5 bucks a week. It takes about 50 minutes to get to Culumbia from my house tho. What do you think? lol

Dude, I'd take that in a heartbeat. What subway stop are you on?

"Dude, I'd take that in a heartbeat. What subway stop are you on?"

LOL, I think he's actually serious about this.

you have NO idea. $250 a year for parking? i'd let my buddies at columbia use the car whenever they wanted, too.

Yeah, it's a great deal. A spot in a garage can go as high as 500 a month.

"you have NO idea. $250 a year for parking? i'd let my buddies at columbia use the car whenever they wanted, too."

What about yourself though? I mean you live in NYC, so what would you do with a car which is 50 min away?

You could use it to pick up chicks.

hmm i was actualy joking but maybe this can work out lol. Uh, how bout , no charge. Instead, Id love to use the car sometimes haha

Ud have to take the 1 train down to penn , then get on the long island railroad and get off at bayside. it takes like 50 minutes. Or, you can take the 7 train to mainstreet and then take a bus to my house. That would take a little over an hour.

Ahhh, the Orient Express.

oh ****, bayside!?! wow....so pretty much to get ur car from there to the city it'd take u about an hr and a half and more than 2 bucks to get there! Not to mention the increase in ur insurance premiums if you add ivymaterial to ur insurance....

i'd say NO DEAL!
