Cars bill different from amount due?

Hi, my cars bill says I owe about $5000+ while my quick statement says I owe $3000+. (The reason for this is that my UG scholarship paid out half). Can I just pay the actual amount due rather than the $5000 through E-Bill?

Thanks!

And...is UG scholarship FAFSA/Cal Grant? I'm a bit lost on the whole matter actually. Do I receive money through FAFSA AND Cal Grant every year?

You don’t receive any money from FAFSA. You will receive your Cal Grant every year. I believe your quick statement is the accurate amount owed because it reflects your financial aid received. Have you received all of your financial aid? Will financial aid cover everything for you? If so, don’t pay anything. All your financial aid will eventually end up in CARS and will cover the entire balance due.

UG Scholarship/any grant given by UC Berkeley is simply a used to fill the quota for the amount of aid you need.

If indeed financial aid does not provide enough to cover your fees, go ahead and pay the amount due, follow the quick statement instead of the e-bill, it only updates once a month.

The quick statement is current (or maybe one day behind), the e-bill is a frozen historical record of your balance back on the day it was “printed” and will never change. It just gets succeeded by a new e-bill for the following month.

If you think there are additional FA payments that will be made, you might wait a few days before paying. If you think that $3,000 is the appropriate balance due, just pay that. No need to pay what was printed on the e-bill.

so i’m confused about the CARS/e-bill too.

my cars bill says i owe $7,500 but when i check my cars quick statement, it says that i don’t owe anything (but i’m not sure since it says as of: jun 18,2010?). so do i just leave the bill “unpaid” for since my financial aid i will receive this fall is around $9,000.

and does the quick statement update daily?

yes, quick statement updates everyday

its says june because it covers costs from the day you accepted the offer letter

you probably don’t have to pay anything since the quick statement says $0 but to be sure, log onto myfinaid and check the amount that has been paid to your cars account and if that amount is larger than the amount that your ebill shows then it means that everything covered and there’s nothing to worry about.

double post

thanks for the info aeboi!

when you say “log onto myfinaid and check the amount that has been paid to your cars account” where do i check for that on the site? and how do i know if the financial aid goes to the cars bill?

on the left side bar, click award payment status

any financial aid payment goes directly to pay your CARS bill and if anything is left over, it is given to you as a refund through EFT or a check that you pick up

so on the “paid” column, if there’s money shown then that means that my financial aid has been already awarded?

if so, then i am covered for the cars bill. so now i don’t have to do anything to the bill correct?

nope, as long as the quick statement is $0, you’re fine

ok thanks for the help

Hi,

My quick statement says as stated below.

Minimum Amount Due Now: $0.00
Minimum Due + Full Reg Fee: $0.00
Account Balance: $2,867.75

I think I have about 950 more coming from My Finaid. Does this mean I have to pay the rest by august 15th?

double check by looking at the ebill amount and compare that to the amount of financial aid you have received/will receive, if it’s less than the ebill amount, yes you will need to pay the extra amount.

Hello,
I just checked my e-bill.
On my most recent e-bill, which is 7/23/10. At that time, my residency status was still nonresident, but now everything’s fixed. So on my e-bill statement, it says:

07/17/10 NONRESIDENT - UG REGIST 08/15/10 11,010.50
07/17/10 UNIVERSITY FEES REGIST 08/15/10 5,730.75
07/17/10 HEALTH INSURANCE REGIST 08/15/10 761.00
07/17/10 CLASS PASS FEE - TRANSIT REGIST 08/15/10 68.00
07/21/10 RM & BRD UNIT 2 HOUSNG 08/15/10 1,170.00
07/21/10 RM & BRD UNIT 2 HOUSNG 09/15/10 1,170.00
07/21/10 RM & BRD UNIT 2 HOUSNG 10/15/10 1,170.00
07/21/10 RM & BRD UNIT 2 HOUSNG 11/15/10 1,170.00
07/21/10 RM & BRD UNIT 2 HOUSNG 12/15/10 1,170.00
07/22/10 2010 CALSO PROGRAM FEES STULIF 08/15/10 150.00
07/22/10 PAID AT HOUSING HOUSNG 50.00

So I think excluding the nonresident fee, it’s around $7879.75 including only the first dorm fee.

Then on MyFinAid it says,

Fall 2010
Award Accepted Paid
Cal Grant A Fee Award 5,151.00 5,151.00
Federal Pell Grant 950.00 950.00
Federal Academic
Competitive Grant - 1 375.00 375.00
Federal Subsidized
Direct Loan 1,750.00 1,742.00
Federal Unsubsidized
Direct Loan 2 1,000.00 995.00
Federal Perkins Loan 600.00 0.00
SUBTOTAL 9,826.00 9,213.00

But still on my CARS bill it states,

Minimum Amount Due Now: $0.00
Minimum Due + Full Reg Fee: $0.00
Account Balance: $2,867.75

I’m so confused. Is this ok? DO I have to pay any more money? On my Bearfacts bill, it says i’m registered. so am i all good to go? do i have to put any more money?

No, not right now you don’t. Do you have any more aid coming to you that isn’t posted yet? Ie. My son is waiting for the Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship to post. Is financial aid going to cover your entire cost of attendance?

Hello,

Thank you for your response~ I saw that I still have about 2583 dollars to come from Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship for this fall semester.

But I have a question. I thought my financial aid would cover everything but looks like i have about $613.75 left. I know I have work study and all, but did the financial aid add our health insurance fee yet?

I signed up for insurance at Berkeley and I remember them saying that if you accept the insurance, the financial aid would add some more so that they can pay for that too. Did they do that already or no?

Thank you so much!

Oh, I don’t know about that. We waived the health insurance coverage because we have my son on a good plan. I think the amount charged per semester for SHIP is $761. If they add that, you would have a little left over… You will have to call to find out about that. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Oh wait, your Perkins loan didn’t fund yet, did it? That is $600 right there…

cbpunim3: i am wondering about that too. i have a good health plan, but the FA office assured me that i would get 1522 more in grants to cover the SHIP cost. so i decided that i might as well keep it. but it looks like they charged me for SHIP in my CARs and i did NOT receive any more grants yet…i called the FA office and the girl had no idea what she was talking about. she told me to contact the SHIP office and said they are responsible for giving out refunds to FA students. so i called SHIP and they told me that i was misinformed and that i should be getting more FA from the FA office. i tried to call the FA office again yesterday and today and i couldn’t get through. i emailed them 3 times the last 2 wks and didn’t get a reply yet. so we can either wait it out, or we can just opt out and pay the $50 late fee penalty

If you have a good plan in place, opt out and pay the fee. It might be worth it to avoid the frustration of trying to get an answer!
