This question is for people who are / have been freshmen at FSU...

Did you have a car at FSU?
How did this affect your experience?

I’m asking because my dad doesn’t want me to have a car at FSU

Obviously, I’m starting as a freshman this year and don’t speak from experience.

We were told at orientation that parking sucks, they have awesome bus service, and everything on campus is walkable within 15 minutes. That said, parking is included in the tuition fees, and for my own comfort I will be bringing a car. I don’t want to be dependent on people if I feel the need to go somewhere that’s not covered by the bus route, and living in Tampa, I think it’d be pretty ridiculous to have my parents have to come and get me (it’s a 4 hour drive).

I just finished my first year without a car.

However, I the first semester I had crew practice 5 days a week and carpooled off-campus with a group of people, so I got to experience parking first hand. It’s usually pretty rough during the day, but it clears out at night (obviously). It helps to know secret little parking lots around campus so you don’t have to rely on the heavily used and well-known parking garages.

Personally, not having a car wasn’t a problem. I knew enough people who had them that I could grab a ride to publix when I needed to (even though there’s a bus stop right in front of it, and I took the bus there on occasion), and I was able to carpool to off-campus activities. However, for next year I know I’m going to be doing more stuff off-campus, and I want to have my car there for the sake of not having to rely on the bus system or friends.

Secret parking lots? Can you offer any advice on the best places to park?

I’ll be bringing my car up from Orlando. Nobody will want to carpool with my anyways since it’s a 2 seater. I plan on volunteering in the fall so I need to get around town somehow. Parking is horrible at every college, but it’s a lot better than waiting on a bus.

well I most likely won’t bring my car so hopefully its manageable. I will be living at players club which has a Publix within walking distance and campus only a bus ride away. I wonder If they will bring zip car to Tallahasse; is anyone familiar with it?

I know I missed out on a lot of things this year because I had to rely on public transportation to get to school, and I hate having to rely on others.

I’m thinking FSU will be a little different since I will be living on campus and they have a good bus system.

Is there often a need to go far off-campus, where using the bus service would be a huge inconvenience?

larryw09, there’s barely ever a need to go off-campus where the buses don’t travel, and if you need to go there, you can always use the city bus system or catch a ride with someone else.

does anyone know how late the busses run? I’ve got a job up there that i think will be the only reason i’m going to need a car because if I close I’ll be out until 2-4am

The Night Nole bus does not run in the summer but the bus will run from 10:00pm to 3:00am on Tuesday thru Saturday in the fall.

The city buses are free to FSU students with your student ID.

Okay so the Seminole Express goes from 7AM to 7PM, excluding the FAMU/FSU engineering school shuttle which stops running after 6PM.

Then there is a Night Nole bus which (in the Fall only?) goes from 10PM until 3AM excluding Sundays and Mondays?

Well I don’t like the 3 hour gap between Seminole Express and Night Nole in the evening.
Plus according to cybermom, Night Nole doesn’t run on Sundays or Mondays.
These are both inconveniences =(

Does the Seminole Express arrive at its bus stops at least once per hour? I hate having to wait 40 minutes at a bus station for a bus… Or having to get to work 50 minutes early and just sit around since that’s the closest time the bus could take me…

I meant Night Nole only runs fall and spring semesters, not summer.
Most of the buses say they come every 15-20 minutes but 40 minutes in the summer.

Oh, okay!
Thanks, cybermom, that cleared up a lot!

I’m a freshman starting this summer, and I’m bringing my car. However, I’m going to use the bus service to get around campus, I’m just using my car for driving home… I live 5 hours away, and I feel bad for bumming that long of a ride off of someone.

I know friends who take a bus back home and it ends up costing them less then driving in their own car and paying for gas

TMTTransport provides a bus from FSU to South Florida for $80 roundtrip or $65 one way.
