CAS - academics

For those at NYU right now - how are the academics at NYU? My daughter wants to go there becasue it's in the city, but for the huge amount of money we'd be spending, I'd like to get a grip on the academics at CAS - she's undecided in her major, but it will be in the humanities or communications. I keep reading about huge courses taught by TAs and don't know how true that is.

well, the communications studies major is in steinhardt so she would need to decide which before applying

But is she allowed to even take a course in communications if she is at CAS? She wants to take various courses before deciding on a major.

well, I believe so, but priority is given to comm. majors and only a select few courses are open to students in different schools. Gallatin might have more access, but I'm not sure. Even then, she would probably take the comm. courses later, possibly after she would have to declare a major. I'm not 100% sure, but that's the impression I got from my counselor.

The journalism program is housed in CAS but broadbased communications is in Steinhardt. If she's in CAS, she might be able to take a minor in Communications in Steinhardt but she wouldn't be able to major in it from CAS. Lots of students want to take various courses but it's not always as easy as you might think, especially if it's outside of your particular NYU college. Not all classes are available to non-majors and most classes are not available at all to those not in a particular college. You might want to contact Steinhardt and confirm which might be available to her.

Thanks everybody. She is really most interested in the journalism part of communications, so she will probably be okay at CAS (if she gets in!)
