CAS freshman taking questions....

Correction: the bit about the high rise elevators under Weinstein, that's actually Hayden. Just noticed.

Is Hayden party hard or is there time for you to get away from it all and get some studying done? i dont mind the occasional parties but is it a everday sorta thing?

yea, and do most people drink and smoke pot at nyu? i mean, i don't mind that stuff, obviously, cause that's college, but are there people who just go out on the town, hang out, and have fun w/o that other stuff? is it hard to find those people?

What kind of punishments come with recreational marijuana usage? (At NYU, in the city its only a $100 fine and a civil citation) Are prices exorbitant? And do RA's care if they smell cannabis in the doorways, will they call the police/have serious repercussions?

Is Hayden party hard or is there time for you to get away from it all and get some studying done? i dont mind the occasional parties but is it a everday sorta thing?

No, people don't party everyday. There are a few floors that have wild parties, but not really. You can absolutely get studying done. If there are wild parties on your floor, then there's always the Hayden library or Bobst.

Drinking is more common than pot, I think. Most people drink a little bit during college, but not always to the point that medical attention is needed. Although during orientation week, we had the ambulance called on our dorm 4 times. And it's absolutely not hard to find people who just go out and hang out and stuff. Most people do that. You won't find a lot of huge frat parties here.

I have no idea. I don't think the RAs really care but they're getting paid to care. Punishment for pot usage is usually getting written up and maybe some kind of judicial review, I think. It might be as serious as expulsion. Some guy living next door to me I think got expelled over pot usage. I have no idea what pot costs because I don't smoke pot.

what does kimmel have for students?

Foodfoodfood

NYU > Kimmel Center

why not do a little research on your own......

1)how do you pick your roomate, is it random?

2) Can guys and girls be in the same room?

Can I get more info on Goddard Hall? Especially on the rooms and the social life. Hayden just sounds TOO wild for me. I'm not an antisocial person but I would prefer to have the option of a quiet time when I need it.

Also, is there a way for me to visit the dorms? I live in the city (but I'm not commuting for the first year) but how do I get in? The security guards won't let me in since I don't have any friends in NYU.

1)how do you pick your roomate, is it random?

You can request roommates. If you and someone else is going to NYU together, you can request that person. However, the request has to be mutual and you have to request the same dorm.

2) Can guys and girls be in the same room?

Only in Water Street, for upperclassmen. However you have to go through a painful application process and live in the financial district, a good 30 minutes from school (if you want to live together). If you're asking if they can hang out in the same room, of course they can.

Contact the admissions office and see if they'll let you do an overnight type deal. Otherwise, the best you can hope for is to borrow someone's NYUcard and swipe in.

Goddard is kind of unknown, mysterious. It's an all-explorations dorm, so everyone in Goddard is in an explorations program of some sort, but I don't know much about it.

hey,

if you are rejected for freshman fall admission, can you re-apply as a transfer student for spring semester, or do you have to wait a full academic year until you can apply for transfer?

if you decided to completely change majors, how hard is it to transfer schools? i.e. CAS to Gallatin

how does the dorm situation work for RDers? i know that only ED gets first preference, but can RDers at least request a dorm, or name a dorm as their number one choice?

thanks so much!

Can you apply as a transfer for spring semester? I'm not sure

To transfer schools, usually you have to fill out an application and explain why you want to transfer. I'm not sure about CAS to Gallatin, but CAS to Stern is nearly impossible, so don't even try.

RD kids pick what STYLE of dorm they want, i.e. apartment style or traditional, and basically get placed someplace that fits their preferences. ED kids get their choice of building. ED kids generally do get their first choice.

why is CAS to stern impossible?

I said nearly impossible. Probably has something to do with the fact that spots don't open up all that often, and you have to compete with the external transfer applicants too. I'm sure it's been done before.

I'm still taking questions, only because I don't really feel like writing my paper for administrative law.

this is more of a general question, but if you noted on your application that your in AP English and planned on taking the exam, but are currently having second thoughts about and chose not to take it, does that in any way hurt your acceptance? in other words, if you opt out to take the AP test are there any sort of consequences? thanks!

Would you say that majority of the clicks form by interests, or by being in the same classes with people? Out of curiosity, in your opinion, do you think it will be difficult for me to take in the full experience of friends and college life due to the fact that I will be relatively a year younger than all of the other freshmen?

To go along with that, I know it's a pretty vague question, but.... at such an enormous, spread-out school, has it been generally easy (in your experience) to form friendships with people in your dorm, classes, major, whatever?
