CAS or Stern?

I realized that I cannot apply to both schools at the same time. I currently go to CC with 3.75 gpa. I took all the prerequisitive courses for Stern, but I heard that Stern's admission is very competitive. However, I really want to go to NYU although if I don't get into Stern. I've never thought about any other schools. If I will get rejected from Stern, I think it's better to apply to CAS majoring Econ. What do you guys think? Should I apply to CAS?

I don't have very strong EC's, never had something like internships (which I heard important for Stern admission). But I was the president of two clubs, worked in SGA, Honor student, Dean's List. Will I have a chance for Stern? or Should I apply to CAS?

I know many of you said that we have to apply to the school where we most want, not based on the difficulties for Admission. But when it becomes that I don't have any places to go if I rejected from the school, I get pretty passive.

I'm an NYU student, an Economics major - my advice is APPLY TO STERN.

Applying for a major you don't want for the sake of getting in is a terrible idea - believe me, many others have tried it, thinking they can transfer after a year, and failed miserably. A lot of these kids are in my Econ classes and have realized they don't want Econ, they don't care about studying theoretical economics, they want Business, and some are trying to transfer out of NYU now. If you want Business, do Stern NOT CAS, you might regret it later, then you'll have to transfer, possibly out of NYU.

Econ is NOT Business. Econ is a liberal arts major which teaches you the broad theories and policies of economics. In CAS, you have all the MAP requirements, ConWest, Writing the Essay, Foreign Language, etc. Not so in Stern.

Business involves a lot of applied Econ, but you pick a concentration like Finance, Accounting, Marketing, etc. You can't get that in CAS. If you really prefer Business over Econ, apply to Stern. CAS and Stern are both competitive, but Stern is more selective. If, however, you decide you prefer Econ, go for it. Just based on what you wrote, sounds like you don't even want Econ, you want Business. Good luck with whatever you choose :)

Btw, Fordham CBA is another good business school in NYC that you might want to consider, it's easier to get into.

most competitive applicants to stern have really great ec's...your chances with poor ec's and a 3.75 from a cc i dont think are too good...but what molly said still applies

If your SAT scores are strong, I'd apply to Stern.

My SAT scores aren't strong; however, I'm transfering as a Junior. Still, haven't decided which school to apply. One day I feel like I should go for Stern but nextday, I feel too afraid to give it a shot so feel like CAS. Not sure what to do...

I'm in the same boat. I want to end up at NYU, but it's hard to leave the University of Michigan for anything but Stern (when considering NYU).

you shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that you are a lock for cas either...you have a shot, but there will be plenty of people applying with better gpa's from better schools

What I concerned is that CAS acceptance rate was much lower than Stern last year. So CAS was more competitive than Stern last year! Last year, at Stern, there were 95 spots for transfer student and 1190 people applied; however, CAS had around 100 open spots and there were 1800 applicants.

Where are you getting this?

from NYU Admission Board. I have captured the screen if you guys don't believe me.

What is the point of applying for a major you don't want? You get in and then end up not studying what you want? Sorry, but that's ridiculous. If all you want is NYU, you might as well apply for the Ancient Greek major.

CAS is competitive and Econ is one of the most competitive majors. Stop worrying about petty differences in the acceptance rate, it's not a huge difference. Apply for the major YOU want. it sounds like you want to do Business, so apply to Stern. Doing liberal arts because you think you won't get into Stern is honestly stupid.

Sorry if this is harsh, but I'm an Econ major at NYU, and I've met at least 5 kids this year who are like, "Ummm I applied for Econ, but 1 week into the school year I changed my mind - Stern!" Sorry, you can't snap your fingers and transfer instantly. Now they're in a major they don't want, they're taking classes like Writing the Essay, ConWest, Foreign language study, and hating it. Some are trying to do an internal transfer - very hard to do with Stern - others have to transfer out of NYU because they want to study Business, Finance, Marketing, Accounting, and guess what, you can't get that in CAS.

I wish you the best of luck with NYU and hope you get in, but if you have any common sense, you would stop worrying about a 4% difference in acceptance rate and apply for what you want. Is it the end of the world if you don't get into NYU?

from what i heard of from my friends transferred to Stern last year, they seems have a preferences towards students applying from four-year institutions..if you really really want to get in NYU, i would suggest CAS..econ department at NYU is also very prestigious..however, i heard you have to take lots of irrevalent courses @ CAS. not sure about it though.

^ yeah, there's lots of core requirements, part of the Morse Academic Plan (MAP)...you can go on the NYU CAS site to figure out exactly what courses you'll need to graduate.
