CAS vs. Gallatin

So, I'm currently applying for NYU next year, and I just want to know what's the difference between taking a major from CAS and making a major with Gallatin.

I wanted to be a journalist, but also a screenwriter. I wanted to be someone who writes for the screen, but also writes for Vanity Fair.

I looked through the website, and I read about CAS and Gallatin. Both programs sound nice, but I'm not sure which is suitable for me.

I just want to know what's the difference between CAS and Gallatin, so I won't regret over making a bad decision in the near future.

I’m in the exact same position. I want to be an editor for a fashion magazine and work in fashion journalism. I’m not sure whether to take Gallatin or CAS either.

SAME position. I want to work for a travel magazine. Don’t know if I should go to CAS for Journalism, Steinhardt for Media Culture Communication, or create my own through Gallatin.

Bumping for anyone’s input on these questions. Only when I saw this discussion did I even KNOW about Gallatin. My D considered Steinhardt for vocal performance (though that’s an audition and you HAVE to apply to STeinhardt), versus CAS for philosophy/physics. But if she could COMBINE all that - it would be GREAT! I know she couldn’t take vocal “Performance”, but one can get a music minor at CAS. So…how in the world does a person decide between CAS and Gallatin? I read another thread where many said Gallatin was harder to get admitted into. (some posters disagreed and put CAS first). What I noticed is that I found merit scholarships (Presidential Honors) at CAS, and didn’t really find anything at Gallatin. If a student is possibly eligible for that top 5% honor and could get a scholarship at CAS…does anyone know if there is anything like that in Gallatin that I just haven’t found?

That’s really strange and coincidental. I’m also a writer, have thought about writing for Vanity Fair AND doing travel writing. And now I’m applying as a transfer to Gallatin. So we’re all on the same page here. Perhaps even the same paragraph, haha.

It seems like Gallatin is a lot more flexible and provides more opportunity for hands-on experience outside the classroom (through internships and such). CAS requires you to choose a specific major and stick to the program. It really is a matter of preference. All the schools have different standards for admission though. Gallatin focuses more on your experience and less on your GPA and scores than CAS.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you all!
