CAS - When to register for classes?

Hey everyone!

I’m an incoming freshman for Computer Science at CAS. I’m attending the last orientation and haven’t registered for classes yet. From what I know, CAS students have to register at orientation after meeting with an academic advisor. I’ve heard from some people that students have already started registering for classes online though, even before attending orientation!

Am I supposed to research classes and register now? Or do I wait till orientation?

I’m nervous that all the good classes are taken :frowning:

Thanks!

@samc24 Try not to worry. I attended parent orientation and I will tell you that many of us parents were shocked to learn that many of the students attending orientation within that session had registered for classes; confusing for sure. Those of us who were hearing that emails had been sent out to students telling them to just register online without meeting with their advisors was very confusing. What we learned is that the programs with very specific schedules (such as general studies, engineering, questrom) have such a specific set of requirements that registration is pretty much determined. Meaning, a student is to attend a certain course and they can decide which section is taken. Major plays a role in what courses you can register for, as do placement tests. There are so many courses available you will be able to find something you need/ want to take so please don’t worry. You will be fine.

Thank you! :smiley:

@samc24 Hi
My son is in COM and will be attending the last orientation session. He received an email from the College of Communication on May 30th instructing him on how to begin registering before his attendance at the orientation session. He submitted his choices and was put together with an advisor in COM and was quickly registered for 3 CAS foundation classes and 1 COM Class. I was happy that he was able to register then as I did see that there are so many different writing courses, all small of course, but some specific topics were filling up. He wanted to do one on nonfiction writing since he’s majoring in journalism I don’t know if the registration process is different because he’s in COM or because we’re coming from overseas. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Thank you @ParentInParis !
I actually JUST received an email that sounds similar to the one you mentioned!
