My son got into Case (with $19.3k merit+grant). He also got into UC Davis & BU with no merit aid. He would like to pursue BME and possibly do masters later. Finances are not a deciding factor.

Any suggestions on how we compare these colleges and programs?

I got into all three.

I turned down UC Davis because I didn’t want to go to a big school. I’d be paying as much for Davis wth out of state tuition as I would for Case/BU so then why not get more for my money by going to a private school? Also, I didn’t want to just be a number. Both BU and Case would make it easier for me to excel by granting me better access to resources and faculty because of their smaller size.

I turned down BU because I didn’t think it has the resources Case does. Sure, its BME program is excellent. But otherwise, its engineering program and university as a whole isn’t too strong academically. I felt as if Case would be me not only a strong education in BME, but also a better education as an engineer and as a student.

Also, another key factor was flexibility. Case has a single door admissions policy, meaning I can pick whatever program I choose to pursue with no restriction placed from the university. I can easily switch majors, add in second majors, and pursue minors in different fields. With BU, it’s much more difficult taking classes and pursuing majors and minors in different programs.

Looking back, I’m glad I picked Case. Eliminating UC Davis was a no brainer. Taking away BU was a more difficult decision. But I do think that as a BME, Case will offer you a whole lot more than BU will. Case has much name brand recognition when it comes to BME than BU.

I come from Mississippi. And few people in my school knew of any of these schools. So I had to do most of my research during campus visits. So take advantage of them.

Case wins hands down.
